A straight down-grade in nearly every way. Creature design is bland, uninspired, and tame. Exploration difficulty has also been dumbed down, with plenty of entities to replenish your oxygen placed around any zone that requires deeper diving. The zones are claustrophobic, jammed on top of each other and aside from a few outliers never really feel unique. Progression is nonexistent, with several upgrades being crammed in the same locations (and with the small and tight sizes of the zones, usually mere meters away from each other). The biggest offense, however, is in the changes to "story". Below Zero ditches the silent protagonist in favor of a cast of one-dimensional characters and a narrative held together by duct tape. When the player character is not spouting inane observations, she is peddling ineffectual philosophical garbage and trying to convince the audience of how strong and powerful she is (a point the game is repeatedly determined to make sure you understand; women are JUST as powerful as men!). The non-aquatic areas are sparsely decorated and as uninteresting to look at as they are to play in, and would have been better off never existing in favor of a larger and more open underwater map. There are "biomes" that are by design empty gaps of space with nothing to see or do but observe the same species copied and pasted en masse. There are base building improvements. Hooray.

One of the most graphically impressive games created, even without RTX enabled. Weak story and poor decisions by the publisher. An overall improvement to the formula of the Metro series, with upcoming content promising to include a more linear experience similar to the earlier titles.
