Very creative and immersive game where many of your choices affect the story or alter certain events of the game. The story is cool, achievments are cool, and gameplay is fun. Definitely recommend!

Phenomenal game. The combat flows so well and parrying is very satisfying to do. The game is very punishing in the sense that you will die very fast to bosses or enemies until you learn the attacks, etc. But runbacks are non existent, even with very spread out checkpoints. Map design is amazing so you're almost always close to a checkpoint. Also the story is great, and there is a lot of super interesting lore which ties into the story if you take the time to read some of the lore. The story is pretty all over the place and I found it very confusing a lot of the time but it was super interesting so I didn't mind. Great game, definitely recommend.

I have barely heard of this game. Very underrated! Generally not that scary, aside from a select few moments I will not spoil. But it's very creative and cleverly made. It legitimately feels like a crazy virus taking over your computer, but it's completely safe and really cool. Also the achievements are awesome. Even though you probably gotta search up some of them, they are awesome. Also, very cheap game that I was able to get on a 50% sale. Definitely recommend.

Early Access Review
I was once a tester for this game, hence my playtime. I've only played about 3.5 hours of the final product, according to Steam. I tried to push myself and get further into the game but I had to stop.

HANGRY is a hack and slash game featuring uninspired dull gameplay, a terrible progression system, questionable design/balancing, forgettable characters, and a visual style that I don't find very appealing.

Nearly every tutorial is dumped on you at the start of the game. No intro cutscene, nothing. Lots of live pop-up tutorials that you need to read. The complete opposite of "show, not tell". Then suddenly, the game gives you the next mission and now you're on your own. There’s still many things not explained to you, which they should. You can pause and read various tutorials and "tips", but I don't think the average player wants to sit down and read blocks of small Arial font text.

The combat is mindless click spamming, and the occasional dodge roll. There's also a stamina bar, for some reason. Heavy/combo attacks use stamina. Stamina drains super quickly while regenerating incredibly slow. You get 2 finisher moves you can use: biting and cleaving. You have to get enemies to low health and make sure they're stunned. (every enemy has a stun meter that depletes if you leave them alone too long). You can bite enemies for health and stamina. You can cleave to gather more ingredients. But yikes, if you choose to eat enemies to get back resources, you can get random de-buffs as a result of eating something not good for you or something. Great way to encourage using the unique mechanics that are critical to survival. You can find wild plants scattered around each area to eat and heal. But they're hard to spot unless up close. You also get a berserk mode, which lets you perform faster and stronger attacks in exchange for draining your health. You can use it once you charge an incredibly slow meter, and you can't even exit it until you finish off an enemy by biting them. I think? Eh, I dunno. I almost never use it 'cause it's too busy slowly charging up.

Enemy design varies from mediocre to frustrating. Attacks are horribly telegraphed. You will get randomly hit a lot if you just rush enemies. Which sucks because the combat system flows a lot better if you can just rush enemies down, constantly eating enemies to regain resources to keep rushing enemies. Sometimes I would get hit when enemies just turn in my direction. Enemies can whack you within milliseconds, You are capable of being staggered and getting knocked down. Which sucks. Some enemies have annoying attacks like trapping you momentarily on the spot, giant AOE attacks, projectiles that are hard to look at. Every "boss" is just a much tankier version of a normal enemy. For some reason in every single area where food monsters dominate, the most common enemy I run into are these stupid gun wielding robots. They are weirdly tanky, do decent damage, shoot annoying laser beams, and you can't yield resources from them.

And what’s better than a good ol’ slow trailing system to pair with the combat. Every single main quest requires you to go out to a specific area, enter a mode that limits vision, slows you down and does not let you fight. Then find a starting point, then follow trails to find point A then B, then you can fight the enemy with extra health. You can’t skip anything, the game does not let you. It’s all slow and tedious. The side content features mostly annoying fetch quests. I did get a couple escort quests where I had to defend a baby slowly marching a marathon. I also got a quest where I had to get x amount of kills in a certain amount of time. Unfortunately, if you wanna get stronger you gotta engage with the side content, which I don’t want to do. The combat is clunky and dull. And there’s plenty of downtime.

But what's the progression system? How do become stronger? You manage 9 different skill trees. Not joking. And you unlock more as the game goes on. These skill trees are not even remotely interesting, visually or contextually. They're all linear and offer very small/niche upgrades. The very few "significant" upgrades are locked away towards the ends of these skill trees which require lots of resources and require you to reach the endgame. And when I say "significant" I mean kinda significant upgrades to… stats. The only upgrades I can remember that were actually interesting was a healing ability that lets you consume all your energy to heal. (you should have it by default). A second dodge roll out of your initial dodge roll. (which I remember liking a lot, you should get this by default or much earlier on). And then there’s a small handful of upgrades to the weapons… where you get to use the unique attacks in the berserk mode just.. normally in combos. If that didn't make sense then don't worry it's not that crazy. What sucks is that nearly every upgrade only gives you a small boost in stats. "Gain 20 movement speed". "Max health increased by 50". "Max energy increased by 3”. These guys also love their percents. “Consumable items are 33% more effective”. “Increased resistance to negative effects by 10%”. “Hitting an enemy from behind increases your crit chance by 15%”. There’s also a comical amount of upgrades that offer a small benefit when a niche condition is met.

ALSO, every skill tree has its own kind of XP that you need to gather and level up, which is hard to keep track of. You collect 2 kinds of currencies and collect so many different ingredients from every enemy, which is stored in one big mess in the menu.

You can use ingredients in the weird cooking system ‘cause why not. You use recipes you collect. You time button presses, click on various shakers, stir with a spoon, and balance meters. All in varying orders. It sounds confusing. It’s actually very easy it’s just not fun. You can actually spend some currency to skip the process which I find funny.

I haven’t even mentioned the areas you explore. You supposedly “explore the galaxy” but in reality that’s 4 barren wastelands each with a different coat of paint. Every new weapon you unlock allows you to break place-holder looking barriers to unlock more dead space.

The UI is confusing. And it often looks like it’s placeholder stuff or it doesn’t fit in the game. For some reason, a lot of the UI is so skimpy and awkwardly thin or small. I hate the very thin fonts that are used, especially when lots of text is being displayed in big chunks.

Visually it looks alright at best. Looks like the devs went for a “realistic approach” and a “cartoony approach”, but they didn’t commit enough to either. I notice it most with the enemies. They just don't look that great. Also, the same enemies are found in every area, just re-skinned.

The characters are forgettable. You play as an obnoxious brat, you work with a narrow-minded clout chaser. You’re friends with an alcoholic who sounds exactly like Awkwafina, which I guess you're supposed to like? And there’s a friendly robot who’s pretty boring.

I remember going through the entire story as a tester. I didn't think it was anything special. What really sucks is that the presentation of the story sucks. You go through only dialogue boxes with mediocre voice acting. Characters who are talking/are important will randomly, awkwardly, and comically zip in and out. That's it. Nearly everything is TOLD to you through exposition. This game takes place in a cyberpunk metropolis where food is king and monsters roam the area which sounds genuinely AWESOME but you're shown NOTHING. The most you can see of this bustling city is peaking outside the dumpster area of your home base.

Pair all that with a forgettable soundtrack, and you have the video game of all time. There's a lot more to be done for this to become a okay game. If you want to try it, get it on heavy discount. But I think you can get MUCH better and bigger games for the same price or cheaper.

Amazing turn-based combat, amazing story telling, awesome characters, incredible soundtrack. Generally an amazing game.

I do think the pacing of the difficulty is kinda wonky. It's hard to tell where you can safely explore outside of the main story cuz you can run into optional areas all over the giant map. Some of these areas you may be a little underleveled for, and some you may be like 50 levels underleveled for. Or perhaps you'll stumble upon an area you should've found earlier in the game and you just breeze through the areas effortlessly. The only indicator you get is a "danger" label at the entrances to such areas. You could poke your head into these areas and see if you're at an appropriate level but that is tedious and time consuming. I wish you could get a recommendation for what level you should be for these areas or something.

Here's a spoiler free tip if you choose to play the game: Try to keep the main story high on the priority list. You can explore some, but you will become overleveled and breeze through the main story and finale. You can always return and clean up the map once you beat the game. And there is much, MUCH harder fights/segments outside the main story that require you to be high level.

Another critique: The various perks/skills/upgrades you can equip are incredibly overwhelming. It's very in-depth which is great, and the actual turn-based combat is amazing. But assembling builds/team comps can be a little tedious and draining. You can yolo a lot of stuff and not bother with a lot of the finer details but there are tons of synergies and it's so much more rewarding (and fun) to use actual builds or team comps with some thought put into it.

Also another thing is that your damage is capped (for some reason) for a good chunk of the game. Then suddenly the cap is removed and you're given access to like 50% of the map, featuring enemies and bosses who have their health and damage spiked like crazy. Personally I did not enjoy slowly roaming the map looking for the next area I could safely explore. It doesn't help that the majority of areas don't have much content outside of a bunch of your typical "random encounters" and a mini boss or two. There are exceptions. You can come across awesome segments/story/bosses and more. But (in my opinion) there is a lot of "filler" exploration and combat.

Last main critique: I think the story is amazing, and generally I was able to follow along well, but after 100%ing the game I think there is a lot of questions left unanswered and generally a lot of things left unexplained, which confused me a lot. It could be me being very stupid, (I am very stupid), but I found it was less of things being intentionally vague, but rather more details that should be explained but weren't.

Generally though this game is awesome and the quality is insane. Definitely recommend.

If you love p5 or p5r and want to see more of the phantom thieves then this game is a must-play, but wait for a sale.

The controls on mouse & keyboard are absolute garbage. I had to spend 30 minutes near the beginning of my playthrough just to fix things up. I didn't encounter much bugs. There was a reoccurring problem where the game would randomly deny or not register keyboard input. I had to keep tabbing in and out to fix the problem. Absolutely unacceptable for an $80 dollar sequel that follows such a good game. But If you can look past that I think you can have a very fun time with this game.

The combat was kind of whatever. It's just mindless button mashing/clicking. Enemy type weaknesses unfortunately dominate as the most effective way to kill enemies. But there's a fair amount of depth to the combat but half the time you can never process what is going on in battle. But you can interact with the environments sometimes to take down enemies which was really cool. Stuff like riding a skateboard to plow down enemies or blowing up explosives. Just play on an easier difficulty.

The story is definitely not on par with p5 or p5r but it was still pretty good, with a decent amount of standout moments. It takes some time for the story to really come together, and the latter half of the game gets a lot more interesting. Especially towards the end. The story still carries a lot of emotional stuff and strong messages like p5/p5r. You also get a lot of fun moments with the phantom thieves. The new characters are great. Voice acting still awesome. Music still goes incredibly hard. Visually it's still as good. 3D animated cutscenes actually look a fair amount better than p5/p5r.

If you love p5/p5r, and can look past a lot of rough edges with this game: Get this on sale and enjoy. It's a very fun time still.

If you play this game expecting a similar gameplay loop to DOOM 2016 and Eternal, you'll probably be disappointed. This game is vastly different to both, but it still plays amazingly well and keeps what is so special about DOOM.

Both 2016 and Eternal consist of tight/claustrophobic battlefields with many ins and outs to run around in. In this game, you are on the ground pretty much all the time. Battlefields are a lot more flat, open and much bigger. There are tons more enemies. This game is still as fast as the previous games, if not faster. In DOOM Eternal, you had 2 rechargeable dashes you could do. In this game, you can zoom across battlefields with your shield-saw and bash into enemies. And you get a sprint button. It's awesome. You are still constantly on the move weaving in between projectiles and strafing, just like classic DOOM.

A big criticism from DOOM Eternal was the "lack of ammo". People did not like running out of ammo constantly and using the chainsaw. In my 25 hour close-to-100% playthrough of this game, I could count the amount of times I ran out of ammo on one hand. And that's just for spamming a singular weapon. Your shield is a critical part of your survival, and almost all uses for it give you ammo. Including melee. You are encouraged constantly to get in enemies faces to bait out lots of parry-able attacks and you can squeeze in many melee attacks with varying effects. You're not running out of ammo.

Parries play a very big part in your survival. Most enemies have at least one attack you can parry, and then you can counter. There is a lot more back-and-forth with the heavier demons, which feels absolutely amazing. There are parry-able projectiles, and it's really fun strafing around enemies whooping ass and parrying things on the go. Then you could follow up with a shield bash across the battlefield and finish off a demon you just parried. Something like that. It's really fun.

Another big plus is that you're free to use whatever weapons you want, like in DOOM 2016, except the weapons are much more balanced. In 2016, pretty much no enemies had weaknesses. Just shoot them. But it's a lot easier to just use the super shotgun and solo everything with it. In Eternal, you were pretty much forced to use your entire arsenal to counter different enemies, etc. But some weapons were definitely outclassed by others. In this game, every weapon feels powerful, and each weapon has a niche. Some are better than others, but I found myself using all the weapons much more evenly than the previous games ever made me. But Eternal kinda forces you to do so. I chose to do so for this game. Enemies vary a lot more than eternal did, and many enemies still have unique weaknesses. But you can still take down most enemies with whatever weapon you choose to use.

Weapon mods have been re-worked. Your right-click is replaced with the shield which works beautifully. Instead of getting something attached to your weapon to slightly modify it, you get an entire new weapon. There are weapon classes. The "weapon mods" are the different weapons for each class.

Example: Combat shotgun and super shotgun. Same class. Both are its own weapon mod. Press 'F' to swap between each. Or, you can also press the weapon hotkey to swap. In this case, press '1'. If you love using hotkeys, then you will love them so much more in this game than the previous games.

Quick-swapping was nerfed big time. You have to kinda commit to swapping weapons. But I enjoyed that a lot. It made me make more use of my entire arsenal.

Instead of having a bajillion confusing menus like in the previous games, you have one big "shop" where you purchase upgrades, with 3 categories. Your guns, shield, and melee. You can upgrade each individual gun which consists of many unique upgrades. Less BS like "shoot 50% faster" and more cool stuff like "throw your shield-saw into a demon and shoot it to ricochet bullets off of it". You have 3 currencies that you collect throughout every level. The main one is gold, where you will collect and spend hundreds and thousands. And then rubies and "wraithstones" where you collect very few of them and spend on big upgrades for your gear. I enjoyed this system much more than any of those in the previous games.

This game streamlines health, ammo, and armour upgrades. You upgrade each little by little by fighting more powerful demons along your journey. A lot cooler and simpler than having another set of menus. And you also don't have to worry about weapon mastery challenges gatekeeping really busted perks. You do get these much simpler challenges, but it's all for cosmetics if you complete them, which I prefer.

As far as the dragon and mech plays out, it's pretty good. Obviously not the highlight but they were very good at maintaining good pacing with the game and keeping some variety. Both mech and dragon segements are shorter so they don't feel like a hassle, even if they are pretty easy. Sometimes you will be alternating between riding a dragon or using a mech and fighting on the ground. It's really cool and it flows wonderfully. And of course, you get to ride a dragon and operate a mech. It's awesome. You can even get glory kills with the dragon which is pretty cool.

And speaking of glory kills, they're pretty much gone. When you stagger enemies to be "glory killed" you will just whack them with a shield or kick them or something. There is a very rare chance you will get a custom animation though, which does make them feel even more awesome when it happens, but don't expect them. AS FAR AS GAMEPLAY GOES, this does work in the games favor. Trust me. There are tons more enemies so constantly triggering glory kill animations will slow down gameplay and ruin pacing. It flows much nicer when you are running around whooping some demon ass and then whenever you stagger an enemy you can quickly whack them or shield bash into them for health. It works great gameplay-wise in my opinion. BUT, I do think they still could've gotten a bit creative with the animations. But it didn't bother me.

Exploration felt kinda similar to god of war. I haven't played that game in a while and I might be tripping but that's what it felt like. There is a lot less things to collect, and some secrets are replaced with large quantities of gold or other valuable resources for equipment upgrades. There is significantly less codex pages to collect which is a massive W. One of my biggest gripes with the previous games. There is usually only like 1 codex page per level. Sometimes 2. Just for key characters and locations. The rest is saved for the cutscenes which are awesome. There are also much more cutscenes than the previous games combined. The story was... confusing. But, fun to follow along. Lots of "hype moments and aura". But I liked it.

Visually this game is absolutely amazing. It has a similar art direction to DOOM 2016, but I think it's more on the dark side. Plus all the medieval stuff which is amazing, and the drastically improved graphics. The music still slaps. Obviously it sucks Mick Gordon isn't here, and obviously ♥♥♥♥ Stratton. But anyone dunking on this game because Mick isn't here can suck my ass. The intense metal music of DOOM is supposed to get the blood pumping and get me all tensed up as I rip and tear demons. The music does exactly that. I often don't have the time in-game to acknowledge the fire music because I'm busy panicking and figuring out my next moves. Generally though I do prefer Mick's stuff, but that does not mean the new soundtrack is bad. It's really good. And the different tone/sound/whatever the ♥♥♥♥ you call it really fits the whole medival war themes. And there are definitely some bangers, like, um, the menu music? Might be recency bias, but I gotta say that's gotta be my favourite DOOM menu theme by a long shot. Pure gas.

So yeah this game is peak basically. Loved it. 11/10. Thank you for listening to my ted talk.

I recommend this game with a bit of hesitation. It's good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought. It's very mysterious and vague. I had many questions and did not really know where the narrative was heading until the very end. But after credits rolled I felt mildly underwhelmed. It's not all bad though. The story is pretty engaging, the tone of the game was great and so was the voice acting. The story also gets very dark. And somewhat spooky. If you're a massive scaredy cat, just like I am, you will spend a good chunk of this game terrified on what will happen next, even though not much will happen. It's not horror, just a lot of suspension. There's often no music, sometimes there will be calm music playing, sometimes there is intense/suspenseful music. The sound design is very good. So the game is very immersive. Which is why I would sometimes be at the edge of my seat, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ my pants. But for the most part, I did enjoy the story. There is no filler or unnecessary fat, the story is paced wonderfully. That filler comes from the gameplay.

The gameplay consists of walking. The game starts with a very long session of reading to get a little background of the story. After that it's just walking. I found myself getting lost and mildly frustrated even with the map & compass you're given. Even though the game is short, it feels very slow paced. You can't move very fast, animations are slow and sometimes a little clunky. But I suppose that could allow you to really immerse yourself into the game and it's story. Visually it's very good. Not much visual variety but it didn't bother me much.

I still enjoyed the game, and it was an experience I'm glad I had. I got this game on sale for very cheap, so if you can get it on sale for cheap then I'd say it's well worth it. If you REALLY hate horror of any kind and are a massive ♥♥♥♥♥, then I don't recommend. Unless you're cool with that experience.
