I went into this game not really knowing what to expect, and I was blown away at how much it not only builds on but improves the first game -- a smaller core cast means the characters are more fleshed out (I found that by the end of Oxenfree 1 I didn't care about nearly any of the characters save for Alex and Jonas, and even then Jonas never really struck a chord with me other than the way he integrated with Alex), and boy do they flesh them out. A few of Riley's witty quips are not always welcome given the mood, but she's an incredibly solid & consistent character, and I already loved Jacob by the end of the first act. It might just be where I am in life right now, but the theme of this game made me weep several times where I only teared up during the first game. The air over Camena is thick with loneliness and rotting history, something that's reflected by the stories of the main characters several times over the course of the game. I felt what they felt what Camena and its civilians felt, which is only appropriate given the open wound that's been festering since before we were introduced to any of it. And although each character has their own discrete traumas to work through and move past, their individual histories form a web of parallels towards the Kanaloa which is every bit as painful to pick through as it should be. I get the sense that even after a thorough first playthrough there's still a lot to discover. Even little things like flicking through radio stations at different times rewarded me with little bits of neat dialogue about post-death life and reincarnating as an almond tree, or just fun things like the Moss Movement station. However, if you're looking for a game that's identical to the first, I would recommend just going and replaying that, and trapping yourself in a time loop. But why not just move on?

luv me cove, luv me sea, luv me mums, simple as. a very genuine and simple story about some kids in a beach town. the way the game can be tailored to your preferences and the broad but heartfelt strokes it features make it feel like I'm living my ideal childhood in someone else's idyllic hometown :) very joyful experience. can't wait to play the dlc
