I genuinely can't get enough of the storytelling in this game. It's brutal and unforgiving. It takes time to begin to understand the world, it's mechanics, and the horrific lore within. But damn the story telling and suspense is sooooo good.

It makes for a great co-op shooter and time killer. No real story, but the draw of the game is its unending stream of dopamine-injecting violence and quick reaction gameplay.

Pros: Fantastic atmosphere, highly detailed environments, and the main antagonist is genuinely horrifying.

Cons: It's largely a 7 - 8 hour hallway simulator with some "puzzles" thrown in. Every puzzle is a "oh, you need X item(s) to open Y door. Wander around for a little bit, pick them up, and listen to the protagonist monologue!" No part of this game requires thought or decisions on the player's part. The environment highlights every possible item and interaction for you from miles away, and at times tells you EXACTLY what to do. I mean, the protagonist audibly voices an explanation with almost all objects or explains to herself what significance some lore bit might represent. You, the player, don't even get to feel like you're solving any mystery. You're just along to listen to Marianne slow walk herself through some kindergarten 'square hole, square block' type puzzles.

The worst instance of this was a moment when the game repeatedly built up the danger while giving the player glimpses of a large monster in the background... But when the monster shows up, time slows down, and you get a real big notice on the screen like 'Drag X item to the right'! I felt like I had enough time during this to set down the controller, stretch a little, maybe even do a few jumping jacks. You never have any real interaction with that monster again.

In summary: The Medium plays as if 100% of this game's budget went to the voice acting, artistic design, and marketing teams.
