This might be the best game I didn't expect to enjoy. Go buy it.

I've spent 435 hours in this game at the time of this review. That equates to roughly 18 days, or just over half a month. It is far and away my most played game on Steam (my next most played game is TF2 with 150-some hours), which doesn't even compare.

This game is hard. Possibly the most complicated thing I've ever done in these 18 days is walking in front of NPC units as they walk across the map and stopping periodically so that they have to stop to - thereby allowing me to attack the enemy's units at a safer area relative to my side of the map.

This game is more than just a game I play - I can also watch games from within the client, both from my friends and from professional DotA 2 teams. The International, a Valve-created tournament held in Seattle, will this year have a prizepool of over TEN MILLION dollars (mostly funded by the community).

The hats and other accessories in this game are also spectacular - I sometimes wonder whether I'm playing a game where I viciously kill different creatures on a battlefield, or one where I play dress-up with oddly disfigured digital dolls.

Although if you don't want to spend your days getting flamed you should probably pick up this game at the same time as four other friends.

tl;dr - Community (at least in the metagame) is good. Valve is good. Game is great. Play with friends.
