"Women fear me, fish fear me, and men turn their gaze as I walk past. No one dares make a sound in my presence as I walk alone on this barren earth." -Unknown Author

This quote pretty much wraps up how I felt after finishing the game.

Insaniquarium is one of, if not the best, retellings of "Dante's Inferno" I've played in YEARS. There's no nonsense, no microtransactions, no subscriptions, and no limits; it really just has it all, if I'm being honest.

The premise is simple: you are playing as a mouse cursor locked into the confines of a 20-gallon glass box full of water, commonly known as an 'aquarium'. Within this 'aquarium' are two humble guppies. You must keep the guppies fed, lest you watch them wither away and rot. As you feed the guppies, they become larger and begin to produce dabloons, which can be collected and used to feed them more or to buy other things such as fish and upgrades. As you play, you begin to suspect that there is a sinister, lurking threat that hasn't made its presence known yet. Suddenly, a warning flashes on the screen, accompanied by a loud siren. This warning reads, "ENEMY APPROACHING." A brief moment of silence follows, the music stops, dread begins to build, and the tension is released when one of the most bone-chilling depictions I've ever seen of an alien pops up on the screen. As it begins to devour the fish in your tank, you suddenly begin to realize that the only thing capable of defeating it is you. Equipped with a "Sci_fi_laser_attack.ogg," you begin to blow chunks out of the lovecraftian horror shifting across your screen. After riddling the abomination with holes in a long, hard-fought battle, as quickly as it manifested, it begins to dissolve before your very eyes. As it vanishes, the warm, comforting song that once filled the tank returns, but the feeling it brought with its presence does not.

This is the core gameplay loop. Feed the fish, kill the aliens, and liberate the tank. There's an abyssal amount of depth to this game, and even entertaining the idea of being able to review it all is laughable. No single person could ever truly experience the whole of Insaniquarium. This game could easily be something multiple people spend their lifetimes decrypting and extracting from and barley scratching the surface of. Hats off to Popcap; they have really outdone themselves, and I'm looking forward to whatever they work on next.

If you've read to this point and haven't played the game, I highly encourage you to give it a try. My review merely covers the first 3 minutes of the game, and I stopped there because I believe the rest should be experienced blind. It's changed my perspective on life and shifted my worldview in a way many could only dream of.

Inside every aquarium is a little bit of insanity, but there is only one Insaniquarium.

this game is frickin amazing. the amount of character packed into every single little thing that josef does is astounding. the soundtrack is ethereal, i literally hit a bump and just sat in the elevator and the wall for 5 hours. i can also appreciate that nothing overstays its welcome, every mechanic serves a purpose and then its swiftly replaced. i will say that as someone who's mind wanders a lot while playing games like this, the version of this game that exists in my head is probably better than the version that actually exists, i've literally been thinking about how the robots look on the inside and then i wondered if they were manufactured like cans in a sense that its getting the most out of as little as possible and a lot of the sound design around them reminds me of cans.

but yeah this game is good i'd recommend giving it a try, or even at the very least listening to the soundtrack.
