I remember back in 2004 when Halo 2 launched, there was a series of VidDocs about the development and insights from Bungie. In one of those they mentioned that if you could make a really good 30 second loop of game play, you could stretch that into a full game. "Grenade to open the fight, fire one gun, swap to another for a different enemy type, close distance to melee, reload or pickup a gun on the ground and finish the last enemy." That loop was enough of a hook and allowed so much to build off it to span not only one game but a whole series. Playing Helldivers 2 has that same magic 30 seconds, but also air strikes, orbital barrages, and ridiculously fun weapons you can call in. On top of that crucially important 30 seconds of fun loop, they've also made a stellar co-op experience and an ever changing Galactic War that has done more for my immersion than any number of cutscenes could have. Join the Helldivers, Join Democracy!

I recommend this game to any Civilization fans. Although other reviews are all over the board I am having a wondeful time playing Beyond Earth. Yes I understand and agree with some people that there is less charm and perhaps a lack of features but I also have enjoyed every minute I've played thusfar. And some people may remeber, the first release of Civilization V was very different from where it is now. The jump from base to Gods and Kings was a HUGE gameplay shift and completely changed the game for me, Brave new world had a similar if less intense effect. So although some people might say the base game should be what I expect, I am enjoying Beyond Earth right now and I assume the first expansion for it will shake things up and strenghten the game in the way that Gods and Kings did for Civ V, so enjoy the Sci-Fi paint coat for a while, and be patient, the future holds great promise.
