Beethoven and Mozart were contemporaries, though Mozart was his senior by 14 years. It is speculated (though there are differing accounts) that the two met and Beethoven received lessons and advise from Mozart. Mozart is known for being one of the most talented composers pushing the Viennese Classical school to it's apex. He was also one of the only composers at the time that wrote in every genre and excelled at each one. His works are too numerous to list. His standout operas include Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte and Le nozze di Figaro. He composed over 40 symphonies and wrote 26 string quartets. Beethoven is regarded as one of most important composers bridging the transition to the next era called the Romantic Period. He composed 12 symphonies and 16 string quartets. The string quartet took on a whole knew meaning of expression and musicality under his penmanship.
