The Cat Lady tells the tale of Susan Ashworth, a woman pushed to suicide by the events of her life. However, once dead, she meets up with a mysterious figure called the Queen of Maggots who has bigger plans for Susan... namely, pitting her against five serial killers, aka Parasites. Susan really has no choice in the matter: in fact, she cannot die until she kills all of the Parasites. With that, The Cat Lady begins, a macabre little game that is surprisingly touching while still being spooky.

Above all else, The Cat Lady's art style is one of its best features. Objects are put together in a collage-like style, with color used to set the mood (and often effectively). Combined with the soundtrack, which ranges from death metal(?) to eerie creaking, breathing and heartbeats, it's all too easy to set the average player on edge for some of the scarier scenes. Make no mistake, this game doesn't rely on jumpscares to get your pulse racing. Rather, your own unsettled nature becomes your own worst enemy. For a game with an unkillable protagonist, still making a player scared is quite an accomplishment.

Still, those worried about the scariness shouldn't pass up this game. Underneath the 'horror' aspect is a moving story about death, depression, and the various ways of coping with both. Both Susan and sidekick Mitzi are highly empathetic characters and it won't take most players long to get attached to both of them. The game does suffer from a few moments of melodrama, but they're short and easily forgotten.

Overall, if you're looking for a story driven game with plenty of the macabre, and you don't mind a little horror mixed in, The Cat Lady might just be for you. And if not... pick it up anyways.
