To anyone who hates metroidvanias like me --

Contrary to some reviews, this is not that kind of game. Rain world is a vast ecosystem simulator of a sci-fi, post-sentience, postapocalyptic wasteland. You are positioned neatly in the middle of the food chain, and are expected to run just as often as you are to fight (if not more). This refreshing take on games where you aren't the center of everything, but one small piece of an incomprehensible mechanism is the primary reason it's become my favorite game of all time.

The fans I'd recommend this to most would actually those of monster hunter or soulsborne games, the kind where you can and will die a lot. You will come up against behemoths of impossible power, and you'll feel exactly how small you are in this world until you gain the skills to overcame them, and even then it remains a challenge. This game is impossible to play without finding many different ways to cheese through its absurd difficulty.

However, this is where Rain World shines. As a sprawling nature simulator, your primary task is to survive. The most effective means of doing this is through adaptation, including techniques or discoveries which may at first seem silly. On the contrary, this is instead a function of evolution, not through a physical game mechanic, but through your own mental adaptation allowing you to move up the food chain. I can't say I've beaten carnivorous mode (Where you do greater damage but must hunt to stay alive, and have a limited number of days to reach the end), but I can say I'll always look forward to downloading this on every platform I have steam on.

Somewhat of a tangent here but I grew up on all the adult swim flash games from years ago, I've always enjoyed how many of the games they publish tend to have great amounts of depth to them, I'd check out Give up Robot and Escape from Puppy Death Factory if that sounds like your forte.

The local multiplayer aspect is great too, you can customize a mini biosphere to fight in and stuff
