My overall thoughts: Great game, simplified progression compared to other survival craft games, very chill and emphasizes teamwork in terms of resource gathering in multiplayer, a must buy for fans of Terraria.

This, however, is a review of the updates the game has gotten since I last played in early 2023:

TLDR for the 1.0 update they added new classes, mage integrating old items into itself, and warlock adding completely new items. However, the mage class suffers from these old items not changing enough, the warlock class just doesn't have enough items at all.

•Upgrade Table
The progression has been reworked to use an upgrade table to keep whatever gear you want viable up to end game, its a system I love since it lets you play with whatever weapons you want, but it feels like I should be able to make this table at the start of the game as opposed to mid game. I'll bring this up again for the warlock class where it hurts the most.

•New magic system and class
Magic staves are now their own class instead of being ranged weapons, The issue with this is that not enough impactful magic gear has been added to the game, and the few staves that used to be rare sidegrades to guns and bows are now their own class and thus everyone needs them to upgrade magic - the loot tables are not built for this, you will need to a boss for hours to get 3 players staves, an issue we have not run into with any other weapon class. This will also be revisited in warlock class.

•New warlock class
A new type of weapons called summoning tomes have been added along with gear and class. The issue with these is in that they only have 3 tomes compared to magic's 7 staves or any other classes' 20-ish weapons. The first tome you get is pitiful, equipment can only help so much when the weapon does terrible base damage. You get this tome in the first 10 minutes this is the ONLY tome for the entirety of the early game, or about 10 hours. This means if you're a pure warlock, you will deal the least damage on your pure build team and by the time you can make the weapon suck less with the upgrade table, you can also just go get the other 2 tomes. So you are given a choice: Do you want play it safe and grind for hours to upgrade your starter weapon that you've already spent a third of the game using? Or do you want to play the slots and hope you get a lucky drop for either of the two other tomes before eventually upgrading them? THESE ONLY OPTIONS FOR THE ENTIRE GAME, THERE IS NO WAY TO CRAFT ANY WARLOCK GEAR OR WEAPONS. Now, what was I yapping about warlocks in the magic section for? Well, if you want to be a warlock but don't care about mixing and matching, you will gravitate towards staves since a lot of warlock gear also gives you magic damage, which means a mage and a warlock will HAVE to grind bosses for staves - something that is still balanced in loot tables as a rare novelty item as opposed to a core weapon.

TLDR for the 1.0 update they added new classes, one integrating old items into itself, and the other adding new items. However, one class suffers from these old items not changing enough the other just doesn't have enough items at all.

Now obviously I still love the game and highly recommend it, but I'm very disappointed that the new features in the "1.0 full release update" are clearly incomplete and will need "version 1.1" or "version 2.0" just to make them actually fit in the game.

Let me know if you disagree with anything, I wanted to get my thoughts out there while they're hot, but I've only made it to the ocean so far and haven't heavily used the upgrade table, though I do love the concept and expect to love upgrading my items.

Guys $7 isn't that bad. If we take the colors pack out of the season pass's value (Because let's be real, that's the biggest scam here) you get every character for $6 a pop. If someone wanted one or two DLC characters and didn't want the pass, these will be a good albeit less valuable option.

So when people ask "why are there planned dlc characters from day one? like they're clearly just squeezing money from me." The answer is that these characters take hella time to make.
Now whats the excuse for colors? Like these were made ON LAUNCH DAY and don't add special effects, model changes, or anything that requires any extra work over a vanilla skin. So really, what's the point?

I'm going to have to give this DLC a 10/10

This game is a strong 8/10 for me with 2 major issues keeping it from 10/10

A. I'd prefer the old combo and movement system. This isn't major as the new combo system makes the game much easier to learn, and its not like I hate it or anything, I'm just already used to the old combo and movement system. This absolutely won't matter for a new player.

B. The much much bigger issue in this game is the UI. it takes about 10 minutes from launch to get to an online lobby. Once I'm in, I need to find someone who's currently on a battle station in a lobby with about 30 seconds of delay. This means I can see someone on a battle station, go challenge them, wait to connect, then 30 seconds later the game realizes that this person has already found a match and I get to do it all over again.

If they fixed the lobby this game would easily be a 9 or a 10 for me but as it stands, 10 minutes of gameplay takes about 20 minutes of wrestling with the current UI. Something needs to change

The death system in this game makes playing with strangers amazing! You're rewarded for talking to people since they'll be more likely to want to bring you back that way. You'll also constantly be seeing new faces coming in, old ones dying and saying their goodbyes to everyone on the server, and friends of yours dying, making you panic to make them a revival. Seriously, if your friends are out of town or non-existant, boot up this game and you'll have tons of fun with randos!

Rivals is a fast-paced, Smash-inspired fighter with tons of room for combo-heavy punish games, the game takes a unique approach in cutting out the neutral game that most Smash games take, and instead take an approach that revolves around converting off of anything you can get on the opponent.

Instead of losing my girlfriend on this one, I got her to play. 20/10.
