EDIT: Since writing this review, the game has received many substantial updates which have addressed many of the issues listed below. While I still think this is not a game for everybody, there are a lot less rough edges and a LOT more content to enjoy.

Alright. After playing for more than 40 hours, making several modding tools, creating my own fan Hours and buying dozens of Neville cards on the market, I am ready to render my verdict on this game.

It's good. Very good.

The game itself is highly repetitive and involves a lot of waiting for minimal, incremental rewards. If this is not your cup of tea, I do not think you will have a good time here. Despite this, the cycles you fall into playing this game have a highly addictive quality to them, drawing you into the world it crafts with the quality of its writing (by none other than the great Alexis Kennedy from Fallen London and Sunless Sea), the teasing snippets of lore scattered throughout the game, and the glimpses of a world beyond our own offered by the simple but stylish artwork. The entrancing music certainly helps too, though you will frequently find yourself listening to the same track over and over again.

My biggest complaint about the game is that, as of this writing (August 2018), it still feels unfinished. While several endings are available, they only serve to leave me wanting more. Thankfully, more is coming, in the form of advanced legacies, but they are not in the game yet. If you prefer to wait for a more complete experience before you buy a game (as I usually do), I would advise holding off for now. Still, what is already there was enough to keep me playing for several hours, straight into the early hours of the morning, so it must be doing something right.

I do recommend this game, if only for the quality of its writing and its addictive nature, but I must recognize it is not for everyone.

Pros:
  • Delicious text written by Alexis Kennedy
  • Fascinating lore (admittedly difficult to piece together on your own playing through the game)
  • Charming and unique artstyle
  • Neville. Neville. Neville.

Cons:
  • Repetitive (but addictive) gameplay loops
  • Partly incomplete (several endings available, but not ultimate ascension endings)

Also, choose wisely. Choose Worm.

I was very disappointed by this game. It crafts a spectacular atmosphere and has a great setup, but fails miserably to deliver on any of it. You are only left with vague hints and a cop-out ending that left no impact on me whatsoever. The poor translation don't help either, making certain characters feel unnatural and stilted at times.

I cannot recommend this game. I wish I could, because there are a lot of things it does right, but overall it was just a pain to complete it and a disappointment once it was over.

Disclaimer: I did not play much of this game, despite what Steam says. After the first few minutes, I simply left it running for trading cards.

Dominique Pamplemousse is a form of black-and-white, interactive, stop-motion musical. There is, as far as I could tell from my short playthrough and from looking at videos online, very little gameplay, which means its success hinges upon the quality of its visual and musical aspects. Visually, it presents a striking aesthetic, which might please some; musically, however, I find it to be a failure, as the lyrics are uninspired and the melody monotonous. Perhaps it improves over time, but it failed to grab and hold my attention, and from looking at others' experiences, it doesn't seem like playing it any longer would have made it better.

I cannot recommend it.

This game is incredible. It's hard to find fault with it. The story is exceptional, the characters are complex, the voice acting is top-notch and the dialog is excellent.

It's also the only game that made me cry.

Just amazing. My only complaint would probably be that your choices don't have the impact you'd think they'd have, but they do matter, and considering the quality of the game, that's enough for me.

A very different kind of RTS, focusing more on economy-building and base-building than on combat gameplay. Do not let the somewhat initially confusing interface deter you from trying this out.

A brilliantly executed concept. Manages to transform a mind-numbing real-life mechanic into a challenging experience, both gameplay-wise and morally-speaking.

Still a timeless classic after all these updates. Give it a try.
