A crew of charming robots goes on a crusade to liberate the galaxy from an empire of less charming robots.

Solid turn-based tactics game with some RPG elements.

Darkest Dungeon features a very compeling combination of tactics RPG, roguelike dungeon crawler and base management. In similar way to something like XCOM, the game works on two layers. A dungeon crawling layer where you explore a randomly generated dungeon with a team of 4 heroes and a base management layer where you manage your roster of up to 25 heroes.

The game feels very polished, the art style is amazing and the narration is suberb both in writing and voice acting.

There was some controversy about how the game evolved over time and I feel it highlighted a main issue with the game. I feel the game only works if the difficult it just right... hard enough to fit the gothic/lovecraftian theme but not so hard as to feel frustrating. It feels just right for me but that is a very subjective thing... I've some exprience with similar mechanics but I'm far from being able to exploit the gameplay to it's fullest... so I'm probably towards the mid-high end in terms of mechanical expertise. Players falling too far away from me might feel that the game is either easy or too hard. It's close to impossible to get this right for everyone but the devs added some options to make the game easier, so you may try those if you feel the game is too hard.

The game allows for huge degree of randomness... but I feel it works in the game's favor. It feels great when the game slips to either side of the scale and things go horribly wrong or awesomely right. The game really shines when you start to snowball towards towards a failed mission and you need to decide if you retreat to save your heroes or try to make a few more rooms to at least recover part of your investment in the mission.

Overall an excellent game. The mechanics are familiar but the way they're combined feels very refreshing. A very smart use of the lovecraftian theme in both aesthetics and mechanics. One of the more expertly crafted games of the last few years.
