A bit of a rough diamond - not just because we've had a decade of Mass Effect since and the mechanics are slightly clunky by comparison, but also due to being originally forced into the christmas market after barely a year in development. It's frustratingly obvious that it was meant to be larger than it is, although the bits that are in place consistently outshine the original KotOR. The fan-made Restored Content Modification helps fill in many of the blanks, and you should definitely install it even for your first playthrough.

Aspyr's stellar update job also deserves a mention. The Ubuntu/SteamOS port is really solid and mods are a click away at Workshop. Worth it.

Chapters is certainly a logical continuation of The Longest Journey. All the effort and love that's gone into bringing the world to life would be hard to miss. The shamelessly colourful storybook artwork is as great as ever at setting the atmosphere. It seems nice to have some closure after Dreamfall's abrupt cliffhanger. I felt a slight giddyness starting the game up for the first time.

But it doesn't take long for it to get back to the old tricks. The puzzles are simple but tedious, usually taking you on pointless jogs from one edge of the map to the other, or relying on you to catch that one hint buried in the awkward and long-winded dialogue. Other times it's just about finding the exactly right sequence of messed-up dream logic so you can do the bleeding obvious. All business as usual to those who played adventure games in the 90s, but unfortunately the world has moved on and the design feels decidedly out of place with the otherwise very decent production values.

All in all, I'm not sure that I can honestly recommend buying Dreamfall Chapters unless you have a high tolerance for frustration or a positive outlook on the previous parts in the series. Maybe grab it from a sale, and take the experience as it is, and you may find yourself enjoying the good parts.
