First off before review, if you get any softlocks like I did once at the start of chapter 5 and are in impossible mode with no backup saves. Go here. Follow the directions and back up your regular saves if you have any first, just to another folder or something, then use these backups for impossible mode. https://www.nexusmods.com/deadspace2023/mods/6?tab=description You can grab a backup this great guy uploaded there. Saved me from losing 7 hours of gameplay, gamestate was mostly the same.

Big fan of the Dead Space Franchise, got this remake as a gift and love it so far.

I don't know if it was because I had game saves in older Dead Space games or if it was because my buddy got it for me early and that unlocked it, but I had impossible mode open from the start and went straight for that.

This remake is not just a graphic refresh, it is a new game that follows the main overall story of the original game with some changes.

Some soft locks are very annoying, so if not on impossible I would keep backups at least a chapter behind. For impossible, back up all of your saves to another folder, then set up one of those impossible save backups. Get your impossible run done and then restore your other playthroughs if you have any. They put in backtracking and some sidequests for some extra gear and items. But areas you've been through can always have new enemy encounters.

The weapons have mostly been updated, as far as I can tell everything, save one gun, has the same primary fire. But alt fire on most guns has been changed.

The story beats aren't the same but they rhyme if that makes sense. You don't follow the same path and setup to get to certain parts of the game.

WIl update the review to be more final and less messy once I've finished the game.

Smudge sticks don't work. Bad gayme. Not recommend. Trash. Spend money on bad rats instead.

Edit: I didn't edit this. This game can eat me whole. Straight terrible. Absolute trash status. Refund immediately. Issue charge back. Steal this game. Rob your neighbors and acquire game. Wait for the 1.0 release. Probably made using monkey slave labor like Hello Fresh. This game killed my dog. My resale value on my house dropped after I installed this game. All of my food spoiled when it realized that I was playing this game. Competitive minesweaper is a better usage of time. I will find you. Rage.

TL;DR: I enjoyed the game. I really did. But, it isn't dead space, it can be buggy/laggy, and it really did release unfinished in both story and stability. Really lacks enemy variety. Difficulty falls off a cliff at mid game where ammo becomes a complete non issue and inventory/health is doubled. Last act of the game feels rushed/lacking. Wait for a sale, not worth the full 60$ IMHO. 6.5-7/10.

Unfortunately the game declines hard in difficulty once you get the cover art suit. You have so much more space for ammo, plus extra health. You never find yourself lacking plus you have some pretty strong weapons at that point as well. The other problem is while the environment kills are really fun and quickly kill enemies. The spikes or random spinning machinery you need to make this happen are absolutely everywhere. So as long as you look around a little bit before or during fights, you can instakill several enemies without using any ammo or risking health loss with melee, making the management of saving resources extremely easy. Save for maybe 4-5 individual spots, I think I sold more ammo than I used. I also can say I sold well over twice as many health packs as I actually used. Most of the time just topping off before selling the ones I was currently carrying.

A little past halfway through the game you fight your first boss, its exciting, he can OHKO you, its fun. But, he overall has the exact same attack pattern as a normal enemy. Then the final 2 chapters of the game feel a little rushed or they just ran out of ideas at that point because you fight the same miniboss 3-4 more times. Every time you fight him he is also alone, save for the one time he has a single backup dancer, plus he only has a single attack with a large windup, so not very difficult to deal with, just spongy and takes a lot to put down. Like I said, very exciting the first and second time you fight him. But the last two times just don't carry any fear, you know how to kill him and at this point its very easy to do.

Honestly there is just an issue with enemy variety in general. Basically there are only 2 types of enemies. Melee and the occasional ranged unit that becomes regular melee when close. The only other enemy types are the somewhat rare invisible 4 legged enemies that go down super fast and rarely actually use the stealth once the fight has started, kind of killing the scare they bring, or the exploder guys who are always just free ammunition for killing the other enemies. The only other guys are a regular melee unit who ate too much and is a bit tankier but overall the same unit, and the blind dudes you just take time stealth killing. But don't worry if you fail to stealth kill them, they are just the same melee unit but blind...

The story is as others have said, pretty easy to figure out if you've played the dead space series and/or watched a good number of sci-fi horror movies. Overall it wasn't bad, I enjoyed it, and it did get some praise from me for a bit for not going for the predictable unintended helping evil trope through ignorance. Which unfortunately didn't last as it is revealed towards the end that that was what was indeed actually going on, which is painfully predictable.

Final gripe. There is no new game plus. A large amount of my enjoyment of the dead space games was going back through with near or completely upgraded weapons and steamrolling the game for replayability fun. Not the worst, but is annoying for me personally.

Overall I can say without a doubt that I really enjoyed the game, I genuinely loved playing it. The bad parts I pointed out didn't start to weigh on me until after I finished the game. But I know I am more than a bit biased when it comes to this genre. Sci-Fi survival horror in space is my favorite game type and dead space is my single favorite game series and I was honestly drawn in with the prospect of just getting more of that scary space age goodness.

I can recommend the game, but honestly with the lack of a new game plus feature and the general gripes I do have, I would have to recommend waiting for a sale.

Oh I almost forgot, a big gripe I do have. Without saying anything about what happens, this game like Dead space 3, has its actual ending locked behind DLC. Which won't come out until summer of next year. When the ending to the game is in planned dlc, then in my opinion the game isn't actually finished. DLC is for adding things to the game on top of the base game, like side stories or bonus content that wasn't part of the main product. NOT for the true ending to the main story line. The fact that the game is already 60$ and they couldn't include the full story for that price is absurd to me. Unless the story DLC is made a free content update, regardless of how good it will be, I will probably despise it.

Great game, no dialogue, fun gameplay.

Only one complaint, hard to move precisely when you are big.

I don't know what is causing it, but the game keeps crashing. Finally go into a full lobby after an hour of trying and 20 minutes in, I crash to desktop.

Not worth it for me.

Great game, I started playing on xbox, moved to ps4, then finally to PC.

In total I have well over 3,000 hours.

If you aren't one for grinding then look elsewhere, but for me this is always a game I can come back to and sink another few hundred hours into after a decent hiatus.

Play this if you enjoy games that get balanced twice a year, and have a hamster wheel in place of game content.

Edit: steam gives me the option to revise this review.

Well, Nothing changed, still a pump and dumb of a game. Set up like a big cash grab while the studio works on their next IP.

Absolutely amazing game, the only enemy that you'll lose to is the camera.
That thing is out for your blood anytime the arena gets tight.

Other than that I love this game.

The game is a little on the short side only taking about 7 hours or so to do, roughly one hour per chapter. However I don't see this as a downside, the game never felt padded and the controls for Raiden are very tight so I was more than satisfied with my time spent in this game.
