Jack wakes up to the sound of his snooze alarm going off for the fifth time. He’d fallen asleep texting the girl he’d matched on Tinder. They’d texted back and forth all night, culminating in a date this afternoon. Jack smiles briefly at the memory before reality slaps the grin off his face. He’s almost an hour late to class, and more importantly, his date is in 20 minutes! Jack hurriedly rolls out of bed, painfully stubbing his toe on his roommate Pat’s misplaced chair. “Ffffuu-” Jack closes his eyes and breathes deeply, focusing on running through the paces of his morning routine. Wash face, brush teeth, mouthwash, outfit, hair. Done in record time, Jack quickly inspects himself one last time in the mirror. Satisfied, he finger-guns himself once for confidence before locking the door.
As he steps out of his building, Jack realizes he can’t make it to class before it ends. Well, whatever, Jack thinks as he strolls to the parking lot, can’t hurt to show up a little early to this date. “YOOO JAAACK!” A yell from across the quad shatters Jack’s reverie. Pat, his roommate, is streaking shirtless across the quad toward him. Jack takes a moment to process this sudden development and reaches a consensus on what must be done immediately. As Pat draws nearer, Jack breaks into a sprint for his car. Gotta go fast before someone sees me with this freak in public, Jack thinks. “I GOTTA TELL YOU SOMETHING IMPORTANT! WHERE’RE YOU GOIN’ BUD?” yells the shirtless maniac from behind. Grimacing in terror, Jack flies the final eight meters to his car and throws the door open. He fumbles with the keys for the longest five seconds of his life before successfully starting the engine. Burning rubber and acrid smoke mark Jack’s parking spot as he tears out of the parking lot, desperate for escape from his shameless roommate.
As the adrenaline’s effects fizzle out, Jack remembers the date. He pulls up Spotify and selects his favorite playlist (aptly titled Absolute Bangers) and cruises to the agreed upon meetup location. As he pulls up to the curb, Jack spots his date in the mirror. DAMN she lookin’ fine, he thinks as he silently thanks god. He honks his horn to get her attention, but as she turns around, Jack recoils in horror. Pat grins and waves at him from the rear view mirror.
