When I received Super Hexagon as a gift, I thought little of it. In fact, I had never even heard of it until it appeared in my inbox. Looking at the store page for it and seeing the seemingly cheap graphics and price initially turned me off. But then I loaded it up one day to check it out. And despite its relatively simple premise, I soon discovered what a remarkable gem of a game this is.

The controls are simple. If using a controller, the only buttons you use while playing are left and right on the D-pad. Pressing either left or right will move the screen around your cursor either clockwise or counter-clockwise. Seems simple, right?

When you press the button to begin a level, you're immediately presented with wonderfully appropriate techno music. You're also immediately bombarded with lined shapes that begin towards the outer edge of the screen and move inward toward your cursor as they change color and pulse to the techno soundtrack. There are breaks in the designs however, and pressing left or right on the D-pad with some correct and precise timing will rotate the shapes one way or the other so that you can get your little cursor through the breaks in the shapes. Hit a wall or line and you lose. The object is to see how far you can make it before failing.

It may sound rather simple and boring, but its one of those rare games that is simple, yet challenging enough to bring you back for more each time you fail. "I can do better" you think to yourself as you begin the level again for the 50th time. You become your own competitor as you try over and over to get just a little further than you have before.

And don't think for a minute that it's an easy task. The game starts on HARD, then goes to HARDER, next to HARDEST, and even farther and farther into the realm of insanity on the additional (even harder) difficulties.

As simplistic as the graphics are, they suite the game perfectly and don't need to be any flashier to accomplish what this game sets out to be. And as I mentioned before, the soundtrack, although a bit repetative at times, is perfect for this type of fast-paced hand/eye coordination gauntlet.

Is it a game you'll devote hundreds of hours to? Its possible I suppose, however unlikely. Is it worth the pricetag? You bet, and then some!
