After playing this game three years ago or so and revisiting it, I still can't recommend this game at the state it's in. Especially not playing solo. It's extremely disappointing as I was rooting for this game and the developers for a long time. However, with Potion Paws out, I've given up hoping this game would develop any further, as it's obvious they're moving on rather than sticking around to improve the very obviously still early-access game they've already created.

I really love simulation games. From Stardew to Animal Crossing to Farming Sim, I'm a fan of incremental games as a whole.
I don't mind grinding and I feel satisfaction in not just cut and clear rewards, but decorating and town building as well. This game is not satisfying in either sense.

I want to say it's relaxing, but it's actually extremely stressful being bombarded by quests from villagers when you can barely even afford seeds to keep your garden going. I actually said "♥♥♥♥ you" out loud to a happy little npc baker bear when he suddenly needed 130 eggs from my 4 chickens that barely give 3 eggs per 1 in game day.

The npcs are basically mannequins. I wish they at least had an idle animation because these little guys are dead inside. They don't have very many lines, and they don't react to anything. They don't have individual personalities and it feels extremely rushed.

Matter of fact, the whole game feels rushed. I don't think it's worth $20. Maybe $15 at most. Honestly, I would only pay $8.00 for it. Everything is spread out and stretched. Profits are too low to make the game satisfying. You can spend an entire season farming and not have enough money for 1 upgrade. Npc's are constantly asking for items that are very important for your own farm's growth. However, you have to turn these in and complete these quests to progress and unlock more recipes. Furthermore, the quests feel a lot like questing in WOW. It's just walking back and forth for the most part, there's no creative plots, no story, no nothing. It's just deliver 10 wood here or make me 100 stone bricks or something. It's boring.

The selling itself is very slow and monotonous. You stand behind a booth and wait for npc's to come and buy your items. If you want to avoid standing and waiting at the booth every day, you can hire an npc in town who takes 20% of your profits. As a solo player this really cuts deep into your pockets and time. You can really feel it when quests during year 1 suddenly urge you to create items from buildings you can't afford yet.

To optimize profits, you need to take raw flowers and raw ingredients and turn them into food items or bouquets. This would be great if it was instant, but it takes a long time to finish cooking ingredients. Furthermore, you run out of paper for the bouquets so fast you end up spending weeks just waiting for plant fibers to respawn, or end up turning your whole farm into a plant fiber garden which is honestly a waste of time. To make things even more complicated, you eventually get a seed machine which sounds great, but also takes forever to spit out seeds and only gives you 1 to 2 seeds for each flower/fruit/veggie. There are lots of upgrades like this that I was looking forward to, but ended up making little to no difference at all.

Basically, this game isn't just grindy, it's ridiculous. It's not nearly as bad multiplayer, but playing solo is painfully slow. It's near impossible to do everything at once and come out with a profit. I would honestly rather spend all day throwing pies in Toontown or spend all day standing in GS2 in Maplestory than play this game for another minute and I think that's saying a lot.

refunded this game and got an abortion 2/10

Edit: I originally made a meme review, but I've been thinking about how disappointed I am with this game and I want to share my experience.

My favorite Frictional Games title isn't actually TDD, but Penumbra. However my favorite part about all Frictional's titles up until Rebirth is the type of horror they usually instill in their games.

The type of horror that Frictional has been very good at in the past is letting player's minds build the horror. Through unsettling notes, suspenseful atmosphere, voice overs from the past in empty rooms and caverns. Frictional Games has been very good at building the kind of horror that leaves you thinking, scenes, voices, dialogue, and characters that you never forget.

When players think of a Frictional title, most can easily pick out something unsettling that's been with them for years, for me the main scenes I think of are:

Penumbra Overture: The trapped miner who ran out of food and was forced to eat giant spiders and eventually the toxins made him cut out his own tongue that you can grab in the closet next to his room after he's mysteriously dragged away

TDD: In the very beginning with the poisoned wine and the voice overs of them exploding from the inside out begging for their lives.

Soma, although somewhat controversial, was still very good at building an interesting and unique atmosphere. Although more linear than the rest of Frictional's Titles, I still remember the plot twist at the end where you finally figure out what happened to you.

I think that Rebirth was a marketing flop if nothing else. Having a classic horror developer release a game right before Halloween leaves fans of the series excited for something, well, scary. Rebirth is not a terrible game. I actually did find myself feeling immersed as an explorer for a little while. Adventuring in the dessert scenes, which were beautiful, was peaceful and somewhat engaging. However, the longer I played I realized that nothing about this game was unsettling to me, nothing was scary, nothing even interested me in the slightest. And when a puzzle game isn't interesting or rewarding, it leaves me with a lot to be desired.

What gives the Amnesia series so much freedom is the concept of amnesia itself. Because the main characters have lost all their memories, players can easily put themselves in their shoes. It feels like you're learning and developing with them, uncovering their secrets as if they were your own. In Penumbra, TDD, and Soma the main characters are simply thrown into a world completely manipulated by the atmosphere and characters around them. This is another factor that rebirth is missing. In rebirth, you remember basically everything right away through annoyingly long un-skippable cutscenes. These aren't the kind of voice-over background noise type scenes like in the other titles, these are png images of sketches with a lot of babies in them. If you're terrified of babies, this might be the game for you. But for me, there is nothing more painful than a voice actor singing a stupid lullaby over a png that I. cant. skip. Not to mention the png jumpscares when you're in the dark too long.

Another thing that breaks this immersion is how often the main character speaks and the concept of being able to fight back. If every time you're caught by a monster you can struggle and get away, why would you be scared of them and hide from them? Vulnerability is extremely important to build an atmosphere of horror and is another thing that rebirth is missing.

Overall, I think if Rebirth was marketed more like an adventure game for Amnesia fans that offered more detail behind "what started it all", it would have been better received. However, as a horror game, rebirth is a major flop. I'm extremely disappointed that rebirth didn't have any factors that scarred me for life. I was looking forward to it :(

I never review games but this game is really creative and I recommend it to everyone even if adventure games aren't always your thing.
Little mini games/funny collectibles/puzzles that you can complete on your own so you don't have to look up a walkthrough and feel really stupid afterwards
A lot of cute references to other games and pop culture
I have a whack sense of humor and some of the dialogue still got me laughing
Unique story

It's one of those games you connect with the characters and kinda forget where you are for a couple hours

You can tell the developer really enjoyed creating this game

The only downside is that if you don't take time to enjoy yourselves the game can be finished quick.
Don't rush - ask the good questions and do the fun things. It's definitely worth it :)

The best dollar i've ever spent.

sword in hand,
