So if you do want to get into TF2 I'd suggest starting off on a smaller map that's not as complex as Payload. Try a King of the Hill (KOTH) map or a CTF map and go from there. Or Arena if you just want to keel people - though Arena has no respawning. It's probably the closest thing to plain old Deathmatch TF2 has though - though there are a few custom maps that are just Deathmatch.
