This game is damn near perfect. It's a culmination of everything I love about video games.

Intro

First, let's get something out of the way. This game is difficult. REALLY difficult. But, that's not quite a downside. When you beat a boss, you get this euphoric high that keeps you pumped and motivated to continue. And that's skipping the process of beating the boss itself, which feels incredibly rewarding. For example, let's say you're fighting a certain boss and you don't know how to dodge one of its attacks. The feeling of you finally being able to counter the attack or dodge it is amazing. You can FEEL yourself progress, without looking at your levels and stats. This 'feature' of the game-true progress, that is-is something that most games today miss out on.

If this is your first souls game, like me, you'll be completely out of your element at the beginning. You'll have to get used to all the new mechanics that play and feel completely different to anything you've ever played before. After the first few hours (or minutes, if you're particularly good at picking it up), you'll start to get a feel for the game. That's when you start getting addicted, and you become sort of attached to the game (at least, that's how it went for me).

From here on, I'll divide the review into different parts for the sake of simplicity.

Graphics

This can be the deal breaker for some people, and I can say with confidence that, even without any texture packs, the game looks great. Of course, you can enhance your experience by downloading a suitable pack from the hundreds that are out there, but you'll have to turn your game to offline mode, and I don't recommend that. Online mode gives you plenty of utilities, which I'll get into later.

Sound

This game sounds amazing. From the tiniest of broken dagger attacks, to the largest of dragons spewing fire, it sounds so satisfying and gives off a feel that you are DOING something. There's so much oomf, for lack of a better word, behind every sound, and it really feels like with every movement, you are affecting something.

The music in this game is beautiful, with each boss having their own epic theme, some even calling back to previous souls games (plin plin plon). However, out of boss fights, you rarely hear sounds besides the ones made by the world around you, making each boss fight feel that much more impactful.

Gameplay

OHO, here's the best part of the game. The gameplay is... different? There aren't many words to describe it. As stated briefly in the intro, this game (souls in general, actually) doesn't play like anything else. You attack slowly, need to deal a lot of damage to beat enemies around your level, and have stats that, while they do change certain aspects of your playstyle, they don't change too much. Because of this, you'll find yourself putting more stock into your own skills and improvement than your character's, which is much more easily reflected in the game.

Going back to what I said earlier, having your game on online mode is also a major improvement. It allows you to see messages dropped by players in the form of guidance, aid, and, occasionally, trolling. It also allows you to summon friends to help you with a boss fight you're stuck in (which I really don't recommend you do, but you gotta do what you gotta do, I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) at the cost of having a chance of someone else entering your world and fighting you.

Lastly, I wouldn't recommend PvP, but if you enjoy it then do whatever, I guess lul.

Fun?

Yes, the game is fun once you get used to it. Very fun. It has some replay value, but there isn't much new content in NGs, just better gear of certain kinds and maxing your character.

Conclusion + TL;DR

In conclusion, while it's not for everyone, this game checked a lot of the boxes for me, and, as it seems, loads of other people. If you're hesitating buying this game but have an interest, I recommend you do it since it brought me and many others dozens of hours of fun.

TL;DR 8/8 git gud m8
