This is easily the best F2P game I've ever played, and a top contender for my favourite movement shooter ever. The devs learned lessons from Mirror's Edge, Titanfall, and Apex and applied them to create a dynamic, engaging shooter that doesn't overstay its welcome. I'm hooked.

It’s easy to feel that we don’t matter. That our choices don’t matter.

Taken individually, our choices are just moments — passing quickly and forgotten just as quickly. Taken over the long term, your choices make up your life. Your effect isn’t weighed on the scale of empires: it’s weighed against your family, your friends, your pets, your neighbours. Your choices have a subtle but important effect on the people with which you live in community.

These are the choices that Pentiment presents.

Arguably, the farthest-reaching choice you can make involves a few encouraging words to the right person. For you, it’s an incidental aside in a conversation about a wider mystery; for the other person, you changed the course of their life. The effects of your kindness (or lack thereof) resonate throughout the years. It’s not Mass Effect, where the survival of an entire race is placed in your potentially-genocidal hands. Pentiment tells the story of a community, and those who would shape the community with whatever tools they have to hand.

Set against those forces: an artist who refuses to stand by in the face of injustice and tragedy, driven by relentless curiosity, and their allies, all of which have their own lives and make their own decisions in their own time.

Playing Pentiment is as satisfying as reading a good book.

Finishing it… let me put it this way. Most games’ endings want you to look back over the game with a sense of accomplishment, a “You win!” screen. You overcame the challenge.

When I finished Pentiment, it pointed me back towards my own life, towards my community, and asked how I want to be remembered.

I recommend this game.

e: I do have one complaint: There were no knights fighting snails in the marginalia.

Fantastic. A tour de force for Sam Barlow and co. If you ever played and enjoyed Aisle or Make it Good, this game is for you.

Playing this is like mowing the lawn, except the lawn never ends and the mower's electric cord is infinitely long.

Honestly, I love this game. I love it all the more because death and failure are things you're meant to roll with. Use your lives to experiment and push your limits - but don't be reckless, because things get harder even if you don't die at all.

You're an actor in a play. You have to rehearse. Expect to rehearse a lot before you get a standing ovation.

Fantastic game. One of the only good investigative mystery games I've ever played. No Sherlock Vision here. Everything you need to solve the game is given to you from the beginning. Really wonderful.

Sometimes the most impressive things come in unassuming packages. This is a game you'll remember, especially if you're the inquisitive type.

I love the conceit, but the actual game is lacking. $22 for 3 hours of game - and it *really* should have been five acts. As it is, what should play as a tense, interesting drama instead feels like Rocky Horror. Needed more character writing, more mystery, more everything. The "noir" only lasts as long as the first episode.

Just long enough that you can't refund it.
