best rpg ever made?

post-game update: wow. just completed my first run of the campaign, getting everything done i possibly could. incredibly powerful writing, extremely charming and memorable cast of characters, fun combat and a plot that puts other AAA games to shame. definitely going to be revisiting this game again. and again. and again!

it's not very good fun-wise but it's atmospheric. just got the dlc on sale to get the "true" ending of the game and so far they haven't improved much.

this game feels unfinished. there are a lot of corridors that lead to nowhere and the game is very linear - not something i usually hate on, but dead space felt so much more open, and those games were pretty straightforward.

the combat is easily the worst part of the game and there is a lot of it. 70% off - may be worth a purchase if you were curious about how this one turned out. but it's squarely mid and mostly keeps it safe.

EDIT: ok yeah the DLC is no bueno, bar the hammer. don't expect miracles!

It's a fun game but Gun Media has gone way overboard with the DLC and lack of meaningful content updates.

Really disappointing. Unless you're cool with being nickeled and dimed constantly for minor content updates, I can't recommend this. Less content than Friday the 13th while somehow having the guts to charge more. :(

One of the funniest games I've played in a minute. It's a great little throwback to 90s-era shooters a la Duke Nukem or Blood. Featuring a familiar-looking minor character from Hypnospace Outlaw (a fun little point-and-click adventure game), Slayers X combines early teenage humor, nu metal, and abrasive purple and green color palettes to create something that feels surprisingly fresh despite its clear retro influences. It's funny, the weapons are satisfying to use, and there are plenty of secret areas in the large and inventive levels throughout the game.

If you're an old school Duke Nukem or Blood fan, this is right up your alley.

probably the best co-op shooter on the PC right now! extremely fun, lots of replayability, game feels densely packed with content in a meaningful way and the classes all feel unique and synergize well with each other.

Got it for free through a friend's graphics card reward.

Horrible performance. Visuals are absolutely not what's shown on the trailers/screenshots unless they're from some extremely high-end PC. A 3070 can't run this game on medium at native resolution. Patches have not solved any of the issues. 0/10 port.

Be weary of buying Playstation games on Steam in the future. If they're willing to half-ass their #1 franchise, they're willing to half-ass anything.

the most mid of the left 4 dead clones. really had high hopes for this, bought it when it came out, tried to enjoy it. from the get-go, there were bugs, bizarre difficulty levels, confusing UI, mediocre level design, "adorkable" characters that eventually all blur into one, mtx, a lack of fine detail you'd expect from the so-called "developers" of left 4 dead, and a season pass.

no mod support either.

4/10

Really, really good. A more fleshed out version of Resident Evil 4 with some new mechanics to innovate on the old formula. Hardcore mode is much harder than the original's Professional mode, combat feels much heavier and more fluid, graphics are absurdly detailed. I think the atmosphere is much more pronounced in this remake, too. There's definitely a much more paranoid, grim feeling to this remake than the original -- RE4:R wears its horror roots on its sleeve and feels like much less of a genre leap than the original RE4 did. I actually think this is great if you're a fan of the recent Resident Evil remakes like I am. The more grounded direction they're taking in this remake allows it to feel much more cohesive in Capcom's reimagining of the series.

Quick note on the technical side: there seems to be a problem with GPU memory leaking if you have RT enabled. I think the game looks great without it, so I went ahead and turned it off completely and pushed up the texture resolution to 3GB with all the other settings on high. None of the settings seem to make an immediate visual difference when pushed to their max settings, so I'd recommend saving performance where you can and just going for "high" instead of "very high" or "max" across the board. The biggest differences you'll see are going to be in texture clarity, so prioritize that first. RT looks great, but even my RTX 3070 struggles with it at 1440p with other settings turned up to high -- regardless, it runs great, almost always at or above 60 FPS. The biggest issue you'll have to come to terms with is that RT's memory leak issue will cause the game to crash if you go above the recommended VRAM allocation. If you're using a 3070 at 1440p, I wouldn't exceed 5.5GB of VRAM, as it's just so prone to crashing past that point.

Also, for Nvidia users, search online for the DLSS patch. FSR's implementations in this title are trash. I'm not sure what happened in development but it looks really rough around the edges, visually very blurry even on the "quality" preset with this awful looking sharpening filter that really kills the art direction. Nvidia users should avoid RT completely unless they're using at least an RTX 4080 for 1440p. If you're using a 3070 or higher, you'll want to disable RT and use the DLSS patch to apply DLAA with cranked up texture settings. That seems to be the best balance between performance and visuals right now, as of March 26, 2023.

Early Access Review
Just started playing, but I’m really loving this on the Steam Deck. Excellent for short play sessions and the music is really beautiful and nostalgic — clearly heavily inspired by Silent Hill on PS1! :)

Not sure I'd actually recommend it. It's a good little RPG for its time, but it's extremely rough around the edges and filled with bugs that were never patched (good old PiranhaBytes). It is extremely linear for an RPG but you can definitely see its influence in other games like Fable. I don't think your choices really have any impact in the game and there's only one ending, which ends on a cliffhanger for the sequel. I didn't enjoy the final boss fight at all, but in hindsight (after writing the original version of this review), I don't think it's as bad as I thought it was initially.

There's a ton of backtracking, the dialog is poorly translated (or poorly written?), the voice acting is god awful, and the whole thing reeks of early 2000s Eurojank.

That being said, I enjoyed most of the time I spent with it and if you're able to pick this up for a dollar like I did, it's probably worth it enough -- assuming you can put up with the myriad of technical problems and you're okay with having to fix the game manually with mods. The thing this game does well that later PiranhaBytes games completely fail at is that it's not overly ambitious. This game was made with a small budget and a very small team, so they stuck with a very small world and didn't worry about excessive side quests, sticking to an extremely linear (but mostly fun) main story line and eschewing excess. The result is a bare bones but typically enjoyable RPG that enjoyed some extremely modest success, mostly in Europe.

If I were to give it an arbitrary rating, I'd probably give it a 6/10. Not amazing, but it's fun enough.
