Most of the way through the campaign of this game, I remembered that I was playing on Normal difficulty and was delighted by the thought that I'll have a reason to play through it again on Hard right after.

Just finished the campaign, there's little about this game I do not love - mostly I just wish there was more of it, wish isn't a real complaint. If you like tactical turn based combat even a little, I'd strongly recommend giving this game a try.

The story of this game is like if you let a 14 year old boy write a Mad Max movie but didn't let him watch any of the previous ones. It turns its strongest points into missed opportunities and lingers on its least worthwhile ideas. It forgot what it's theme was ten seconds after making it obvious. It literally undoes its most interesting storytelling decisions, like, that's not even a joke, the parts I thought were bold narrative choices they literally takesies backsied.

There are other open world games. Go play one of those. You're not missing anything.

Do you like unlocking stuff? I love unlocking stuff. I am constantly motivated to unlock things. Characters. Items. Abilities for the characters I've unlocked. I'm all about it.

And what's crazy is that this game is satisfying and engaging even when I'm not unlocking stuff. Even when I'm actively failing at an attempt to unlock something.

If you wanna come unlock stuff, play this game.

I want Steam to stop asking me to review this game. It's fine. Get it if you want it.

You ever play Zoo Tycoon? You ever play Planet Coaster? It's Zoo Tycoon in the Planet Coaster engine. There's other stuff but I imagine for 99% of people that information will be enough to figure out if you want it or not..

This game interested me, and if that's all you need to get you off the fence, feel free to stop reading here, as many are of the opinion that you should experience this game "cold". If you want me to elaborate, read on, and I shall try not to be too revealing.

The Beginner's Guide is a game that encourages interpretation while containing a central message that runs counter to that idea. It makes a statement on how people perceive each other, why people make art, and how art can be used. It's a personal narrative under the conceit of being, largely, a comment on someone else's work. It brings up the idea of whether a game should be "playable". It's a narrative and a meta-narrative and a statement on both.

If some of that sounds interesting to you, and if being interested for 90 minutes and then lost in thought for some hours after justifies the price tag for you, I absolutely recommend The Beginner's Guide.

Cheap at twice the price. The game comes out of the box with some fun game modes to come back to regularly and try to beat your own high scores, and gives you new and interesting content at a steady pace. And you've got dad jokes thrown in. Best value for money on Steam right now.
