Phantom Liberty Review Update
Changing my review to Positive after 2 years

I revisited this game after the 2.0 patch and for Phantom Liberty. I was absolutely blown away by the amount of changes the game underwent. It is so different from the hot mess I played on release. Even the prologue Act 1 missions in Watson had improved, which I had considered it to be the best point of the story.

They added additional dialogues to basically everyone you had the chance to talk to in Act 1, and it fleshes the story out so much more. Obviously this extends to the rest of the game too, I am currently taking my time to go through every single mission to see how has the mission structure improved and what lines have changed.

The skills got a new face lift, can't even call it the same anymore. Everything got reworked and brought to balance. No more of those 18000 crit damage per shot builds. You can still make some pretty powerful builds though.

Overall, this has been a wonderful experience that I cannot comprehensively put to words yet. I'm still going through the main story,sides and gigs. However, I have put in enough hours of experience to say that this game finally got there. It may still be lacking for some, and for others, it's the quintessential masterpiece that belongs in your library.

On a serious note, I am a fan of CDPR but this game is seriously way too rushed.




GAMEPLAY
The gameplay is fine for a indie game from a indie developer but CDPR is beyond just a indie developer at this point.

UI & UX
UI is somehow worse than in the 2018 or 2019 demo. User experience diminishes as every time you break down or sell a equipment, the whole menu has to refresh.

Shooting
The shooting is very lackluster, it works but nothing too impressive. Expect Fallout 4 level.

Hacking
The hacking is underwhelming; in a world of the future, you expect more from hacking but the option presented to you is simply too little. Watch_Dogs from 2014 did it better, the sequel in 2016 absolutely annihilates what is available in this game.

RPG
Gears. Leveling, Stats, It is weird that Witcher 3 was hailed as the greatest RPG of all time as the company made Cyberpunk. CDPR lost its way, Cyberpunk should not have been a RPG. You can find on youtube many different broken ass builds that allows you to slap your way through the toughest bosses. Even without external help, I automatically leaned towards a Crit build, the perks are not balanced in the slightest. My revolver hit 16k in damage - this is a one shot to anyone other than a boss. Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mass Effect 2 both released in 2011 are better RPG.

Traveling
40% of the game is driving - driving is popularized by the GTA series. However, with regret, I have to say the driving is atrocious. The cars do not have weight on them, they all will get air time when you hit a bump. Whatever you driving will slip, either on tarmac or off road. First person view in the car is too low, you cannot see out the windscreen at all - the first car I bought was the Rayfield Aerondight and you simply cannot see the road ahead of you. As weird as this may sound, the mini map is also partially at fault here; the lack of an on screen GPS feature means you have to rely on the mini map to get you from point A to B, but the mini map is zoomed in far too close so when you see a turn, you slam the brakes and overshoot it. Furthermore, the fact that you cannot ride the train for the masses in a city setting is simply unacceptable. I mean Watch_Dogs from 2014 had trains.

Main Story
The main story really does not hold up to Witcher 3. The story for one, is way too short for you to connect with V. They really should not have cut out content. Two, the story is very disconnected with how you think your V acts and behaves.

Side Story
This is the best part. The side content have some of the best writing, cinematic set pieces and voice acting. This is where some of the darker side of Cyberpunk shines though, it is where you find pieces of lore and construct your own perception of this future which may determine what you choose in the ending of the main story.




SETTING
Night City is godlike.

Night City
This is the best city ever created, period. No cities will ever come close to Night City... at least for a while. Night city is exactly what you expect from a dystopian future where capitalistic exploitation is at its height. The cities evolves based on the needs of the population. Slums for the poor, desert for the outcasts, mega residential area for the working class and of course the rich green streets for the damn wealthy. Night city is an epic.

People
The people living in Night City are non existent. The AI is awful. There is no more to say. Aside from the characters that you can interact with through side stories, no one else act like a human. So let us talk side characters instead. Yes, it is fantastic. These people that you converse with are complex beings, they have their own ambition and goals. When your goals align, they become your allies but should the tides look to be unfavorable... well you should watch your back. Where all else fail in the game, you can find excellence here.




OVERALL
It had innovated on multiple fronts but totally ignored basic user experience. Player immersion with detailed animation for each side characters plus superb voice acting elevated this game. The city is gorgeous, utterly stunning to look at and live in. Which is why it pains me to say that all else fail to live up to the exorbitant expectation.






THE AFTERMATH
This is my own opinion now and is very subjective.
No doubt everyone have heard of how the biggest game of the decade failed catastrophically. Mismanagement, disruptive marketing, unhealthy workplace environment all contributed to the game's bad press.
Despite popular belief, I want to say that I think Keanu Reeves was a mistake in casting. His involvement shifted the whole narrative to fit him. His lines are fine usually but dip in quality when Johnny Sliverhand was mad. Also, I think CDPR higher-ups realised the money draw in casing Keanu so they purposely created a scenario in which we get more lines from Keanu but
sacrificed narrative purpose and quality.
I really love sci-fi stuff. Cyberpunk is just a dream of a setting that a game can take place in. It was my prayer that 2077 may still be salvaged, CDPR did not deliver a product that is standard so I am giving a negative review until it can be patched up. Hopefully it will have a No Man Sky comeback story.
