Studying can be a tedious task or a chore that you just don’t want to do, hence why most people probably know more Pokemons than elements in the periodic table. In this day and age, I believe that learning in a formal setting is just not for everyone and that we should be able to provide materials for people that approach such differently. I personally appreciate games that encourage learning while having fun and Shashingo is right up my alley as a creative and everyday learner.
Right off the bat, Shashingo accommodates different levels of comprehension, from beginner to slightly advanced. You get to explore the world at your own pace or challenge yourself with a flash card minigame. It has the potential to be a time-sink if you want to unlock all the filters or further learn how to take nice pictures. As a bonus, it does not only teach how to say the photo subject in Japanese, but it also suggests some related words that might go along with it and has a mini introductory Japanese lesson book.

Obviously, not all launches are perfect. I came upon some bugs which were fixed after a restart. It’s also unfortunate that the pop-up in-text translation was disabled before I got to try it. This made the world a bit empty. On the bright side, however, the developer already shows signs of passion and willingness to listen as they encourage people to share the bugs in order for it to be fixed in the next patch. Please don’t look away simply because of a small bug!

All-in-all, I would definitely recommend the game. I also find myself playing more after this review, either by unlocking collectibles or simply hanging out with the local furry friend Ritsu!
