This is a fanstastic game. Get it. It is totally worth any amount under 20 dollars. Play as every nation and imperialise away. Some other person posted a review already. I'll just quote him/her: 'Racist White Man Simulator 2010. 15/10'. I agree. This deserves a 15/10. Imperialism followed by Three Cheers to Empire.

However, I speak from the standpoint of having all the DLC. Apparantly, without the DLC, it isn't that great. The DLC then, is vital. Buy the Victoria Complete pack. As of this writing, 31 December 2014, both the game and the Complete pack are on sale for 10 USD (which doesn't make any sense, since the Complete pack includes the game, but whatever). Get it.

Early Access Review
Verdun is a bloody spectacular game. It includes a large reliance on social, objective, and challenging game mechanics which the game has fused together solidly. The objectives in the game are completely based on the capture or defence of trenches, which can only be done by teamwork.

Teamwork is the main focus of the game, with squads of four players cooperating as a subsection of the team, where two opposing armies fight in trench warfare. As a social basis, the reliance on teamwork forces leadership and forces cooperation between the players, which also forces people to restrain themselves from the general tendancy of anonymous gamers to ♥♥♥♥♥ and to spend their entire time complaining (excepting situations in which this is justified).

Teamwork means that the squads are engaging and helpful, noobs (as long as they are willing to learn) are accepted as future functioning members of the squad—with people ordering or recommending courses of action. The influence of social and objective considerations is only possible with a challenge, something brought by the fact that in this game, one bullet means death. This is not a CoD or TF2 clone in which your player character can absorb an entire clip without dying. This ups the stakes and forces teamwork, coupled with the game's 'desertion' mechanic, which means that players are where they should be.

The developers did a good job in balancing the game, though there are still issues in it, where maps are unbalanced and a lack of a tutorial means that noobs proliferate. Yet, for an early access game in open beta—this is a spectacularly done job. Verdun's developers listen to the community, and the game itself is spectacularly engaging, something I heartily recommend for anyone to add to their steam library.

Other than percieved balance issues, there is one issue to the game which I feel cannot be overlooked. There is a web-client available for free on Kongregrate. While this is used to 1) fill the servers, 2) promote the game, and 3) draw people in—I myself was drawn in from the web-client, the presence of a web-client means that you can try the full game for free. I feel there should be more limitations on the web-client; and for a game in open beta, with only about 200 regular players, this is acceptable.
