This game is fabulous.

If it grabs you, you'll spend the next decade hunting, fruitlessly, for a game - any game - that scratches the itch you now have.

You'll find games that are good in their own way. Maybe you'll try the one with the mutated animals, but it only allows one play style. Maybe you'll find the indy games that drag on forever, never reaching a climax. You'll wander the corridors of deck-building tactics games, and they'll tide you over for a time. Eventually, you find yourself hunting through the bargain bin for scraps of turn-based satisfaction; a hex tile here, a dice-roll there. The joy is fleeting, never living up to your lofty expectations. You've tasted XCOM® 2, and all else is ashes and disappointment.

At the very back of your skull, that quiet, droning buzz gently - incessantly - demands more, and you will return, defeated, and try desperately to recapture the joy and glory of your first victory.

Beautifully executed, and genuinely funny for people who have completed The Witness. If you haven't, I think you'll miss most of the jokes.

A great little twist on the usual chess rules.

Well, this is great. Some real mind-bending Portal action. Up to a room where I think I need to wander away and let it percolate for a bit.

This game is bananas. It's worth playing just for the mini-cutscene when you fill your [POW] meter.

(Context - 11 hrs in)

The reward in many games is the thrill of beating an enemy in combat, the visceral and primal satisfaction of violence, the steady increase of a score, the satisfaction of solving a puzzle or a designer-throws-hands-in-the-air-and-gives-up unlockable hat or achievement.

The reward in The Witness is epiphany.

Solving the puzzles is satisfying, of course. Completing a tricky mind-bender using the rules you've found so far is good - but what's better is the dawning realization of *what the rules are*. The Witness won't tell you, and that's the game. Staring at a puzzle wondering how on Earth you're going to solve it, and then recognizing a clue - maybe obvious, maybe tiny! - that unlocks it. This is where the moments of pure joy come from in The Witness.

This is the most personally fulfilling game I've ever played. Buy it.
