To be honest, I (And most players, I suspect) came here because of the amazing .gifs of absurd creations in this game. And to be fair, the game provides everything you need to make these incredible creations and more. The graphics style is clean-cut, the game runs relatively well even on a slower laptop, and is very affordable for the expansive amount of content provided. In addition, this is one of the few games I've seen in Early Access where the developers didn't just cut-and-run, and instead have provided continuous updates, all for free.

However, a word of warning. It's harder than it looks, and making those incredible creations are a feat.

Payday 2 is probably one of the best games I've played. The incredible variety of heists, weapons, playstyles...all of it combines (and even moreso with friends) to create one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.

GRAPHICS:

The Diesel engine is certainly nothing to write home about. While Payday 2 doesn't wow in the graphics department, the maps and models are still pleasant enough to look at- the graphics don't look bad or dated, they just simply aren't as detailed as they could be.

PERFORMANCE:

Payday 2 does suffer from some optimization issues, especially on larger/newer maps. The Safehouse is by far the worst offender, being literally unplayable on my laptop and the addition of Duke's room actually crashing most computers for a while. However, on the low settings on my laptop the game ran smoothly enough, and a lower framerate isn't terribly impactful here. On beefier computers, you'll have no trouble.

GAMEPLAY:

The gameplay in Payday 2 is extremely simplistic, yet extremely satisfying for the most part. Shoot cops, do objective. That's all the game really boils down to, yet there's so much more you can do with that simple formula.

How do you shoot cops? Do you use an assault rifle, a shotgun, a pistol? Or do you opt for a crossbow firing explosive darts? Maybe a grenade launcher shooting incidenary rounds is more your taste. And don't forget how you defend yourself matters- are you going to use perks and skills that make you into a armored behemoth, or sprint around in a snazzy suit and literally dodge bullets?

What's the objective? Maybe you're robbing a bank or jewelry store. Or maybe it's THE Big Bank. Or maybe you want something a little louder, like a coke transport gone terribly wrong, or jumping out an airplane to secure pallets of money you just threw out of said plane. Or maybe you want to be a silent crook, sneaking around a mercenary-owned complex or politician's yacht. Maybe you want something wacky, like securing goats with drugs in a city. Or maybe you want something serious, like stealthily robbing a big casino blind.

That being said, Payday does slow down at times here. Securing a dozen or two bags of loot can turn the game into a bag throwing simulator, and while low difficulty cops are child's play some may find the bullet sponges of One Down that require high damage weapons exclusively even less interesting. Additionally, melee weapons are about as useful as throwing a wet sponge at cops (In fact, that sounds like a new melee weapon...)

Regardless, the gameplay is varied, and largely enjoyable and satisfying. Nothing quite compares to sneaking around McKendrick's yacht or blasting through cops to escape with Hoxton.

REPLAYABILITY:

Payday 2 has a LOT of replayability. Between the sheer number of weapons, the vastly varied and incredibly enjoyable heists, and the playstyle-altering skill trees and perk decks, you're going to have a ton to do. Plus 600+ achievements, Infamy levels, multiplayer and just plain satisfying gameplay means you'll be having fun again and again- take it from someone with over 300 hours invested and no plans on stopping soon.

STORY/PLOT:

The game has decided to ditch the serious tone of it's predecessor Payday: The Heist in exchange for an over-the-top absurdity mixed with some serious elements that would make it comparable to Saint's Row when it's predecessor was GTA. With that lack of seriousness however comes a general lack of story. There's a few "arcs" within contractors- Hector has a story arc, The Dentist heists are largely on a linear timeline, etc. But there isn't a real overarching or sensical story, and Overkill's penchant for ditching storylines midway through (Kento, Locke) means the likelihood Payday 2 ever develops a coherent storyline anytime soon is slim. This isn't a big issue however, but a notable flaw I wish would be rectified with a web series, comic, etc.

MULTIPLAYER:

The multiplayer is mostly a blast to play, mainly with friends. Payday 2's multiplayer struggles in two areas: random queues and stealth. With random queues, like in most online games, death may be an appealing alternative to some teammates. But this isn't a problem exclusive to Payday 2 in any regard. What is, however, is the difficulty multiplayer stealth can often prove to possess, especially if the mostly-fixed desync decides to act up.

When you don't have these problems though...Payday 2 shines. Ganging up with friends to fight off waves of cops while you burgle millions is an unbeatable experience.

Overall, Payday 2 has some flaws, but is still a blast to play. And play, and play, and play.

7.5/10
