(Review written in EA Build 2.)

Short version: It's good! But Rift Wizard 1 is far more interesting.

RW2 is simpler, lets you force a build, and recover faster from mistakes. You heal after every level, progression is "named trinket" based, and (tragically) you can only pick one upgrade for each spell.

RW1 on the other hand compels you to improvise, make every move count, and treat everything as a vital resource. Your spell combos can seemingly get more ridiculous. Trying to just force a build will frequently work out worse than running with the cards you're dealt.

I think RW2 is "Rift Wizard Arcade". Which isn't a bad thing! But unfortunately, when I want Rift Wizard, I want the RW1 experience. I might be an outlier there though.

Interestingly, I went back to look at RW1 news, where the developer describes the changes to RW2, and that description is almost the polar opposite of my experience. I certainly don't know more than the dev, and I'm far from a good RW player, so maybe I'm really off base. Who knows!

Love it. Feels like a nice hybrid of Slay the Spire and Darkest Dungeon.

Very long campaigns, and almost too many options/systems to work with. They're all individually well built systems, but the sheer volume of gear options/specs/skill builds/etc could be pretty overwhelming.

Started on Easy difficulty, which is so easy I'm barely ever in any danger. But that's what Easy should be like. Looking forward to a much harder run once I've gotten the basics down.

Highly recommended, even in its current early access state.

ToME is why I'm no longer mortified of the inescapable march of time. I could play ToME for the rest of my life and be happy.

ToME has caused me to feel good about contributing to my retirement plan for the first time since the financial crisis. Thanks DarkGod!

Great game. I keep having to uninstall it because I get hooked and lose hours to it.

Quite possibly the best roguelite I've ever played. Supergiant did a fantastic job making it fun to play, and rewarding successive playthroughs with story and character development, not just "+x to stats".

Superb on every level.

Took a bit to get into the controls but once I did, the game really clicked.

Tons of content. I went hard into the game one weekend and don't regret it.

Game balance breaks down late game in favor of the player, but at that point I didn't care; I just wanted to explore and didn't want to slog through a lot of combat.

Completely worth the money I spent.

Watched the trailer, and thought "Man, that trailer looks cool. I wonder if it feels as good as it looks."

Spoiler alert - it does feel as good as it looks.

It's SO FUN.

Excellent VN, with some real emotional depth. Deals with loss, and how to handle receiving support from others. One of the only VNs I've played where I got some real emotional investment in the characters' interactions.

Very well done.

(Of note: I've so far only completed normal mode, not the NG+ mode, so the 3 hours of playtime reflects that. I'm also a very fast reader, so I believe my "time played" is misleadingly low. Those were some VERY good hours.)
