I wasn't intending to put much time into this game today, but after playing through the introduction I couldn't put it down.

It's a very cute RPG. You'll meet some fun characters, like a housecat and a squirrel who hits a full sized vape pen mid conversation.

Drive cars really fast around a space station. Why? I don't know. It's great.

Chill metroidvania. Looks and sounds great.

It's fine.

Gameplay is identical to the previous installment, and stale from the beginning. Great world, forgettable story.

Great fun. Does some things better than GTA, does some things worse than GTA.

Map is small enough to drive around without getting boring. Taxis are cheap and will transport you instantly without loading.

Combat is predominately hand to hand and feels great. You'll learn new combos throughout the game after levelling up. A handful of folks are challenging when starting the game, scaling up to large waves of enemies.

Firearms are rare and don't appear in most missions. Many of the missions that do involve shooting feel very different to the rest of the game and don't fit in. No guns mean heightened stakes.

City design is good, but some areas don't get much of a reason to visit.

Good, not great.

The alternate history world building and characters make this game. Story is SCHLOCK, which is a good fit.

First handful of levels were brilliant. Later levels have the player going through the motions: shooting bad guys through a handful of rooms, opening a cutscene door, shooting bad guys through a handful of rooms.

Occasionally the difficulty will spike noticeably, such as getting dropped into a scenario with minimal weapons/ammo/cover and hounded with bullet sponge enemies with high damage output. On higher difficulties cover is absolutely necessary - so a gameplay style akin to a shooting gallery combined with a slow walk speed make the game feel mind numbingly slow at points. When shooting from behind cover at mid/long range it feels wrong - as if everything except for the damage output of enemies and ammo type distribution was designed for high speed and close up encounters.

Collectables, concept art an character bios will pop up during gameplay. You can look view the current level's collectables from the journal menu or all collectables from the main menu. There's sections of downtime between some levels, it would be nice if you could read previous level's collectable text in those.

In comparison to Doom 2016 which delivered above expectations, "The New Order" was a disappointment. While suffering from the same issues, standalone expansion "The Old Blood" has a few encounters which give the player more agency during combat, with fewer cutscenes to slow down the game.

Charming and fun. The Sexy Brutale keeps throwing new mechanics and possibilities at you the entire way through and wraps things up before getting stale.

Godawful stutturing when switching rooms, but doesn't impact gameplay.

Challenging and enjoyable. Japanese VO is superior, but I did feel like I was going to go to prison when they introduced a female character.

Subsurface Circular takes advantage of it's short format. A handful of simple, but not underdeveloped mechanics within a single and claustrophobic environment were enought for the narrative to draw me into the unseen city outside of the tube.
Great art and slick style.
