Controls: This is an old game so controls could be polished a bit more.
Gameplay: Having knowledge of history helps. But mostly you will need to read careffully what do what and then you should be okay.
Overall: If you have a head canon to tell a story which lies behind the numbers this game is really great. If you do not have one, then it can be boring.

A perfect game for power fantasy for anyone playing in the FPS genre.

If you are a perfectionist (as me) then you should play the game through normally, than go back to collect evrything. Stopping and trying to collect evrything break the great flow of the game and the feeling of unstopablness.
