It's a fairly priced DLC mostly there to support the developers and the continuous development which they deserve. Buying it unlocks additional content for the campaign but for survival maps you get the new tech for free as part of the regular update. I'm not a big fan of the story but the new campaign missions are interesting enough with some new twists and gameplay elements that keep it fresh. If you like the base game, it's definitely worth getting it.

Really fun and innovative, you have random maps with random resources and in every run, different random blueprints for buildings - make the best of it and try to make it to the finish line in time!

It felt a bit too RNG driven at first but as you get better at the game, both as a player or with meta upgrades (there is a cross-map progression system), you get additional options, rerolls or other ways to handle problems and the game really becomes fun at that point. Difficulty scales up well and you can push it further if you want to so it never gets too easy or boring.

Another bright spot is the excellent UI, the game has tons of shortcuts or intuitive actions that makes it very easy to manage your outpost and villagers. Definitely check out the tutorial, guides and default keybindings because they can help a lot and make it even more enjoyable.

There aren't any major bugs that I've seen, the game feels pretty polished and the devs seem to be on top of any issues, delivering updates and changes every few weeks, and unlike some other EA games these are actually meaningful and noticeable changes and additions. There are still some issues with the overall presentation and balance but from what I've seen so far, they will be solved sooner rather than later.

A definite recommendation if you like objective driven survival basebuilders in which you have to make tough decisions and balance tradeoffs at almost every step.

It's a really good and fun game, if you're remotely interested check out the demo. Excellent combat and fun simple basebuilding while scouring the map for resources make for a really engaging gameplay loop, it's just too bad that some other things often get in the way of that. Some mechanics feel half-finished or outright unnecessary, the UI is pretty bad on most screens and there are still many bugs that need fixing, but if you can get past that you'll have a blast. The game is regularly updated and it seems like they plan to support it for years to come so the chances are high that these issues will get addressed eventually.

My biggest overall issue with the game is the lack of a proper replayable sandbox mode. There's the campaign, a story-driven long term mode in which you eventually unlock all the tech and biomes are linked together... and then there's survival, which is a quick match of trying to build up a base strong enough to survive the incoming waves until the time runs out. Campaign is fun for the first playthrough but later on way too easy and boring, and in survival you're restricted to a single biome and without enough time to unlock even a third of the tech tree, less alone upgrade it to higher levels. A middle ground is very needed and I hope they're working on it, as well as more scenarios for survival with different objectives and more interesting map layouts.

In short, it's a unique and fun indie game that you'll probably love for at least a few dozen hours, but it does have some issues past that mark that I hope get addressed eventually.

They fixed the controller issue so it's a 10/10 game now. It also performs well, except for being limited to 60 fps and sometimes dipping below it when loading into a new area.

As for gameplay, it feels a bit less like dark souls but it's more fun and forgiving. It is a bit more generic in some areas since side dungeons reuse tilesets and sometimes even bosses (one boss in particular was the exact same, except in the 2nd variation it had some adds too) and their arenas. Horse riding is fun, open world means you can go in any direction and power up if you're stuck on a boss. It makes it even more addicting since if you're stuck on something, you can just go do something else.

Still, tons (and really tons) of fun, engaging diverse content, items to collect and enemies to fight. An amazing open world to enjoy and each new region will blow your mind a bit.

It is a really well designed open world pve survival crafting game. In a pretty stagnant and predictable genre Valheim comes up with excellent gameplay design and improved mechanics that make it fun every step of the way.

For example, instead of being punished for being hungry you are now rewarded for eating well. Instead of basebuilding being just an afterthought or a creative outlet, decorations give meaningful buffs that help with everything else you do. Being well prepared for a challenge means more than grinding for it, most tasks can be made easier or fun by approaching them with the right tools. A strong and defensible base gives you an advantage when you are attacked and boats and portals mean that you can relatively easily return to it whenever you need to. There are skill levels and experience that get reduced if you die so dying feels like a real threat at times, but then again - no action in the game has a skill requirement so it never feels too punishing either if the number drops a bit. The time spent in the game is well balanced between building a base or exploring, you can't really have one without the other, and this makes the game feel fresh and dynamic at all times.

In short, Valheim takes inspiration from games like it before and improves on pretty much every aspect - it is a really well designed and tight experience with satisfying gameplay and progression. The game looks beautiful despite the low textures and screenshots don't do justice to the amazing lighting system and fog effects, the stormy nights or sun-lit meadows create some of the most beautiful vistas I've seen in games. Procedural generation could use some tweaks and more biomes but at least one more has already been announced so future is looking bright as well, as well as additions to other somewhat lacking areas like trading or NPC presence in the world.

Definitely worth the $20 if you're into this type of game, despite being early access the game already has a lot of content and polish. Hopefully the massive popularity of the game won't affect the direction/vision the devs have had until now.

Good addition to an already good game, it is basically more of the same: new area with new bosses, mods, gear, traits. New items open up some interesting and fun builds to use.

The story is nothing special, kinda underwhelming and inconsistent, kinda like the vanilla game so don't expect anything better in the DLC. The gameplay additions are good though, bosses are fun to fight and new items seem useful but balanced, most of the time at least.

If you liked the base game and wanted more content, considering the low asking price for this DLC it is an easy recommendation.

It is hard to explain why is Into the Breach so fun and satisfying. At first glance it looks like a simplistic mini strategy game with fast turns due to having only a few units to control, but once you get into it it is so much more. It is easy to learn the rules of the game, but to win you'll have to learn how to twist and bend them so they fit you more than the enemy. You are always overwhelmed and don't have enough moves to do what you need to do, so you have to play smart and use all the abilities you have at your disposal and redirect the opponent rather than face him head on. Sometimes it means picking the lesser evil and having to sacrifice an objective, sometimes it means sacrificing your own unit, but every move needs to be carefully waged and thought out because it could be the difference between winning or losing. Things will almost never work exactly how you want them to, and the game manages to walk this thin line between "this is too easy" and "this is impossible" extremely well, even though it has so many random elements.

Generally speaking, it is a roguelite game, the only progression that carries over after each run however is your main pilot and the possibility to unlock a new squad depending on your performance. Each new squad plays completely differently and results in a drastically altered approach to combat. Upgrades you find along are also randomized, and even though tilesets are reused - the locations of buildings you protect or enemy spawning locations are randomized so it's never the same.

In short, if you like tactical games, definitely give ItB a chance and don't judge it by its cover because it is amazing how much it accomplishes with such a simple presentation and look.

edit: It has been 2 years since I wrote this review. Since then the game's turned out to be in a development hell with very few content updates over the years. The initial estimate of 1 year of early access has been postponed to 2 years and now they've passed that new estimate too, without even addressing it in any way. Pretty much every point made below in the review still stands. Do not waste your money on this game like I did, and never trust taleworlds again.

In its current state Bannerlord is practically a mediocre remake of Warband in a new engine. For a sequel it's downright disappointing, especially after all these years of delays and promises of evolved gameplay in their dev blog posts which just didn't happen.
This might change before it leaves early access but none of the developer comments so far, including the steam page "roadmap", indicate any plans for major changes to the gameplay or overall design, and that is something that Bannerlord desperately needs. So the only fair thing is to judge it as it is now, the product they are now selling, instead of something that might, but probably won't, happen down the line. Which in short is why I am not recommending it, and a more detailed breakdown of the issues follows. If the game changes enough in the future I will update the review accordingly.

Almost every part of the game is plagued by simply bad and frustrating design, unsatisfying progression, technical or balancing issues or simply lack of content. While it has many UI and graphical improvements over Warband, the gameplay has actually worsened in most cases. The best part of the game is combat, and I imagine that's mostly because it barely changed compared to warband, it just looks and feels better. Party and inventory management has improved, an attempt has been made to improve player character progression which failed by their own admission and is pending a rework, but except for that it is still basically the same thing. For some people that might be enough, but if that is all they set out to accomplish this should have indeed been labeled as just a remaster rather than a sequel.

Most of the teased new features of the game are underdeveloped, badly designed or completely irrelevant. The trait system that affects diplomacy is nothing more than just a small adjustment to relations based on a few nonsensical, randomly assigned, traits everyone gets (which also applies instantly to newborns that are labeled as "honorable" or "cruel" on their birth and remain as such forever - even medieval total war 2 from 14 years ago had a more indepth system). The criminal system they teased many times is practically nonexistent and just boils down to a few quests you can accept. NPC permadeath is just an annoyance and doesn't serve any larger purpose, or has real consequences - if anything, it just means that instead of memorable NPCs from the first game like Jeremus, now we have procedurally generated blank slates with generic names that sometimes literally write a placeholder "(Generic backstory)" when met for the first time. There is no succession systems, no unique interactions for killing someone's family, it is just there to delete an NPC from a game and eventually replace it with a generic randomized one. The dialogue trees are literally copy pasted from warband, word for word, except they somehow have even fewer options now since some have been removed. Smithing is an exercise in frustration whose only goal is to completely break the economy because a single crafted javelin can be priced at more than an entire city's market worth. Sieges are still broken, have bad AI, units constantly get stuck and siege engines didn't really add that much to the whole experience at all, they are mostly just something you use on the world map to reduce enemy defenses before the actual siege.

I could list dozens of other examples, from a worse tournament system, worse faction diplomacy, a disappointing settlement upgrade system that doesn't do anything in the end despite them initially promising a more sandboxy strategic experience (it is just a prettier warband sistem with 0 innovation or meaningful changes), as bad kingdom management systems as in warband, a frustrating whack-a-mole endgame gameplay where you alone have to both conquer and defend fiefs because everyone else is incompetent and you can't issue complex or remote orders, the constant running of errands for lords to grind up reputation and then chasing them around the map in circles because the only info you have is where they were days ago, not where they are going, etc etc.

Since release most of TW's time has been dedicated to patching bugs, optimizing the game and doing code refactors which are apparently already necessary since they rushed the EA release. The modding tools are still not out yet and it doesn't seem like that leaves a lot of time to rework core gameplay or add more content before the end of early access which they estimated will last only a year. So in the end, we have a game that didn't add anything new and meaningful to the franchise - it just badly copied the original, but added improved graphics and made promises of better mod support that hasn't happened yet.

Oh and multiplayer? It is already practically dead, queues are extremely long and for some bigger modes like siege it is impossible to find a game at all.

If this changes down the line, I will gladly change the review to a positive one. As it is however, I do not recommend it at this point - you're better off playing Warband again. I hope they are not planning to pull a Bethesda and just hope the community fixes their mess for free once the modding tools are out, because some of these issues are beyond mods, even extensive ones that warband has.

Fun metroidvania with roguelite elements (you are expected to die at some points but it happens much less often than in real roguelikes). Interesting abilities, fluid combat, pretty satisfying progression systems and difficulty curve is smooth as well. Graphics are hand drawn and even though it can look messy and chaotic due to fast paced combat, they are really nice, especially on boss animations.

Has 2 different paths you can take so restarting at least once is heavily incentivized, the other set of abilities can change the way you fight drastically. Each run takes around 10 hours, at least it did for me. Considering how cheap the game is when discounted, it is well worth it. If you like a challenge, there are higher difficulties and a perk that can make the bosses even harder.

The only downside is that it starts off a bit slow and feels sluggish for a while, but it really shines once you unlock additional abilities that let you pull of some really satisfying moves and combos.

Definitely a recommendation from me if you want a casual combat-oriented metroidvania to chill for a bit.
