Basically, the entire justification for the sequel's existence (giant pve campaign with skill trees and such), will not be coming. Overwatch 2 also completely replaces overwatch 1 so if you don't like the changes they did to the game, you're completely ♥♥♥♥ out of luck. Which, I'm not really sure why anyone WOULD like these changes. Skins and such now cost a nauseating amount of money and of course it needs to have a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ battle pass like every single online game has nowadays, just to add yet another game to the extremely long list of games that don't value your time or money. That original $40 I spent on the first game is completely lost to the void with nothing to show for it. Actually, overwatch 2 treats me like a new player now where it says I have to win 30 matches to unlock previously released new heroes, even though I literally have the "win 100 quickplay matches" achievement? Enjoy negative review #94,048.

This is a very fun game! But this is not some sort of battlefield killer or replacement like I was led to believe. It's a good substitute, but I still enjoy games like bf3, 1, 5, and 2042 more than it.

Most of my review might look like I'm just completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on this game, but trust me, I'm not. For $15 this game is a no brainer and if you really get into it, it can last you hundreds of hours. I just wanted to make this review through the eyes of someone whose enjoyed basically every battlefield I've ever played (yes, even 2042!) and was wondering how this little indie game fared against such a titan of the game industry. Also, if you don't care about graphics, sound design, or the soundtrack of a game and just want to know if the core gameplay is good (the thing you'll be doing and paying attention to the whole time,) then don't worry, the gameplay and the chaotic nature of it is very fun. Now, with that out of the way, here are my personal gripes with the game.

My main reason is it's just missing the.....soul(?) of Battlefield that I've come to love equally as much as the chaos and large scale multiplayer fights. Here's what I mean by that. Battlefield is such an amazing series to me because it had beautiful music, superb voice acting that really made it feel authentic, and breathtaking graphics alongside some killer sound design. Battlebit just doesn't have any of that. You launch the game and its dead silence, you load into a map, dead silence, walking around the map, pretty much dead silence. Maybe some wind. The sound aspect of the game just makes it feel very empty to me. The weapon and vehicle sounds just sound very stock and lack a real OOMPH to them in my opinion.

This is also subjective but I really don't like the graphics. I seriously can't shake the feeling that I'm playing a roblox custom game mode or something. There's no swaying of leaves in the wind, grass getting scorched by fire, holes in the ground from grenades or explosions, I couldn't even tell you if the game has bullet decals. The maps just feel very static aside from buildings getting the walls blown off of them. I just can't get immersed in the world because it just doesn't feel, look, or sound real at all.

And I'm already getting kind of bored using the same weapons all the time. There looks to be a massive amount of grinding to unlock the guns in the game. Yes, I'm very glad that they can all be unlocked for free, every attachment and skin and gun are all absolutely free. But at this rate, I'm not going to be seeing half of the arsenal for 100 hours anyways because they just need so many levels or kills to unlock. Like I think I remember seeing an assault rifle that unlocks at level 130? I'm a little over 6 hours in and I'm not even level 25 yet.

Last but not least is the current class balance. It just feels like I should be playing medic 24/7. You are the only class that can heal yourself and heal others. Not to mention being able to revive twice as fast as everyone else. The game just absolutely dumps score onto you for just holding a medkit out, walking into a friendly moshpit, and holding down right click to heal everyone. To me this is pretty good! Lots of people play medic and actually do what they are supposed to do. This is a bit rare to come by in a battlefield game. However, this poses a problem. I really don't want to play any other class because they just don't seem as helpful or get nearly as much score as medic does. Also, he's one of the 2 classes in the game that looks like he can use basically any type of gun he wants. If you wanted to play, say, support, you get to use one gun until you unlock another at level 20 because he's stuck with LMG's. Assault, same problem, you really just get an m4a1 and 2 AK's until you level up a lot. I don't really know the point of playing assault unless you wanted to use grappling hooks. Oh, and since medic is so good, I can never find ammo because either people are rarely playing support, or they just aren't throwing ammo boxes. And I don't think this game is like later battlefields where you can just take ammo straight off of supports backs instead of relying on them to throw it.

Either than those points, like I said earlier, this is still a very fun game and at it's core plays exactly like a battlefield game. Very early 2000's esque feeling to it where dudebros just mic spam and everything is unlockable by just playing the video game. It's a feeling that's very rare to find nowadays because big budget games just play it extremely safe and release full priced games that try to appeal to everyone BUT the original audience because the cost to make games now is so incredibly inflated that they just have to inject micro-transactions into everything they release and try to appeal to as wide of an audience as they can. It just ends up alienating the old audience that made the series thrive and boring the newer audience that they try to appeal to, so nobody is happy.

Aaaaaanyways, long story short, great game for it's price point, great alternative to battlefield if you're unsatisfied with their newer releases and just want the feeling of older titles like bad company 2. Thanks for reading

Edit: I actually have no interest in launching this game again for a long while. It just didn't engage me enough to keep playing. At this point, they have added an option to control the FOV. So knock my first point off. Either than that, I can't be bothered to give it a real review since I hardly played it after posting this. Sorry!

Original review -

I actually plan on playing this game more and wish I could leave a neutral review, but I'm just giving it a thumbs down for now for 2 personal opinions.

1. If you're like me, I need a high FOV for my games or I'll actually feel sick. I have a bit of motion sickness. Right now, the game doesn't have an FOV slider. The game is way too zoomed in for me so I actually can't continue playing it until they patch it in (which I think they are in the future)

2. The dialogue for the protagonist is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad that it's really taking me out of the game world. Every 5 seconds it's just him cursing or making some unfunny quip or joke or being an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ or saying how awesome technology and russia is. I like the dialogue for everyone else though (except the fridge which actually makes me cringe). I tried setting the game's audio to Russian audio, and I do believe it helped a little. However, I don't know if this is intended but the characters sometime talk super fast and can begin speaking the literal microsecond another's dialogue stops. It's really weird.

The reason I set my language back to English is because during a lock-picking minigame I was learning for the first time (which is also timed), the protag and the glove just ♥♥♥♥ out dialogue to eachother in Russian. I couldn't read the subtitles because I was trying to focus on the lockpicking minigame in front of my face so I don't know what they really said. I assume this will happen a couple of times throughout my playthrough so I changed it back to English after that.

I think the gameplay is pretty good and the graphics/artstyle are stellar. If you ignore my 2 points above then you'll likely enjoy this game. I'll be returning to it after an FOV slider is patched in to give an honest review of the game itself

I'll be brutally honest: this is probably the worst horde-shooter I've ever played. The maps are so boring, empty, and quiet. I remember maybe one song that played the entire time and it was during a horde that tanked me and my friend's fps to 30 even though this game looks like it was released in 2015. The special enemies are so ugly, janky, and nothing you probably haven't already seen before. One of them literally just blinds anyone in the entire room, like a walking sun. Another one seems like it can grab you at really any distance it feels like (sometimes grabbing me near a ledge and just dropping me to my instant death.) wow! This game had maybe 11 players before the f2p weekend, so don't expect a ton of workshop content to keep this game going.

There are literally 8 (9? honestly don't remember) guns in this game. Half of them being special pickups that have limited ammo. So you get a whopping FOUR guns to use (one of them is your ♥♥♥♥♥♥ infinite ammo pistol). But its fine because they can get random attachments on them! Except all they seem to really do is improve fire rate, reduce spread, or reduce recoil. Nothing that seems to make the guns any more exciting.

Perks are also boring. I've only played 2 episodes out of 4 and I've just seen the same ones over and over. Half of them seem to just buff the shove (which by the way is on a pretty lengthy cooldown I think for a shove) which I never really ended up using and still never died the entire time. You can just press H to revive anyone who dies, any time, any where, so who cares? The other ones just buff your grenades or double your ammo capacity or I dont know, improve your gun in some meaningless way like smgs can now auto target enemies? Kind of?

If you click on the roadmap button on the main menu it takes you to a post from January 2022 saying how they want to leave early access by the end of the year. It is now January 2023, and I noticed episode 4 is still in VERY early beta and episode 5 isn't even in the game yet. Hm....

Sorry, but I wouldn't even be caught dead spending $10 on this game, let alone $30
