I loved the original Wii game, but this port is terrible. It randomly crashes and softlocks constantly, and most of the time I can't even select a file without the game freezing on a black screen. I've tried lowering all of the settings to the very minimum, as someone suggested, but the game just won't work.

A 60 fps option exists in this port, but some enemies' animations are tied to the lower frame rate of the original game, which makes them zoom around and become unavoidable, instantly killing you, and the solution that the devs came up with was making it easier for you to toggle between 30 and 60 fps, rather than fixing the broken animations or outright removing the option to have 60 fps.

To whoever decided that it was ok to release the game in this state: shame on you.

This game needs fixing, BADLY.

Don't get me wrong, the soundtrack for this game is amazing, but my gripe is that this purchase doesn't include the B-side themes.

Why? Surely they're just as much a part of the OST as the themes of the regular levels and cutscenes? The B-side remix of the Mirror Temple is my favourite song from the game, so I'm feeling sort of betrayed, to be honest. Why haven't they even included the B-side soundtrack as a separate DLC?

I won't refund this since it was 75% off when I bought it, but I'll probably buy the soundtrack from the official bandcamp as well, since that actually HAS the entire soundtrack, rather than just half of it.

I very much enjoy the gameplay and songs of this game, and the graphic design is on point, but it has some really bad controller support and menus. Inputs get really weird while trying to navigate the pause menu while in songs, and you can't even restart songs AT ALL using a controller, because the restart button just refuses to be pressed for some reason.

Starting the game up today I got a popup that said I could press Circle to close it, but it did nothing, so I tried using keyboard, and it said to press Enter to close it, which still did nothing, so I had to click it.
A minor inconvenience, but navigating this game's menus is a whole mess of minor inconveniences stacked on top of each other, like a delicious yet mildly infuriating cake.

There is a very unintuitive system for sorting songs that doesn't really help much since you'd have to be a hardcore fan to know which song goes where, and you still need to scroll for a couple minutes to get halfway through the list.
Since one of the latest updates I've also noticed the game momentarily freezing in the middle of songs, which I'm pretty sure isn't on my end since my computer is relatively high-end.

I would say the game is worth all the troubles, but I really wish they'd fix and change a lot of small things about it.

The music is great, and it's kind of amazing that there are so many different mechanics in a game that uses only one button.

I backed this game on Kickstarter, and was really excited for it all the way up until its release, chatting away on the backer forum and frequently checking for updates. Having played The Neverhood and being a big fan of its visuals and music, I had very high hopes for this game, which sadly weren't met.

If you look past the glitches and crashes that were present before the patch, the game itself isn't conceptually terrible, but it's extremely short and lacklustre. Even after the patch, problems still persist, especially in the form of sounds being too low/loud, or outright not playing at all. The flapping of Beak-Beak's wings and all of the in-game cutscenes are much louder than most other things in the game are. The artistic parts of the game are gorgeous, aside from perhaps the writing, but they don't outweigh the lack of gameplay and worldbuilding, nor how very rushed and unpolished the game feels both lore-wise and gameplay-wise.

To make a parallel to The Neverhood, which was released almost 20 years prior to this, that game succeeded in making a world that felt very tangible, much thanks to its mix of a side-view perspective while inside buildings, but a first-person perspective while going between buildings. There were also cutscenes that showed the whole world at once, and it just felt very much like a real place. In Armikrog, there is only the side-view perspective, which makes the world feel very flat. Not even during the final cutscene do you get any sort of sense of where things are in relation to each other.

This game clearly has effort and talent put into it, but it isn't evenly distributed and will therefore most likely end up being a slightly disappointing experience to the average player, and a majorly disappointing experience to anyone who was on the hype train from day one. It's dear to me because of the experiences I had with everyone else that were involved during its development, but as much as I wish I could, I can't recommend it to anyone else.

This game seems like it could be a nice experience, but my first impressions of it during the first minutes have been pretty bad. For a game with such a limited number of things you can do, it's ridiculously hard to figure out what the controls are, and as far as I've seen there is no way to rebind controls either.

The "Controls" section of the options pretty much only allows you to change the mouse sensitivity and axes, and there is no way to change the FOV (which is so low that it physically hurts my eyes) without downloading code altering software.

It also seems like some things in game aren't even supported by mouse and keyboard controls?? I got to the first interactable object in the game, a mailbox, and tried for several minutes (yes. really.) to open it using my mouse, as one would intuitively expect you'd be able to, but nothing happened, which led me to believe that it was locked or something?

I took a short trip to the discussion forum and saw something about the game being designed around using a controller, so I went back to the mailbox to see if using a controller would change anything, and was able to open it, but even when using a controller, I had troubles figuring out what combination of buttons and control stick movements I was supposed to use, and I can only in good faith chalk that up to me being an idiot for about 25% of that whole series of events.

This game really does seem interesting, and I definitely will finish it at some point, but judging by my first 15 minutes in it, it truly feels like it was designed by someone who is extremely artistically talented, but doesn't know a great deal about video game design. The aforementioned FOV has two settings: Mild Claustrophobia, and Oh God I Have Binoculars Stuck to My Face and Can't Get Them Off Please Help.

I will come back and change this review once I've played more of the game, because I know that I haven't played enough of it to give a fair verdict, but I really felt a need to to vent my frustrations, because I don't want to go through the entire game feeling this way about it.

This game is fun to play with friends, but is fundamentally flawed beyond the excuse of still being in development. It has a broken and counterintuitive UI, a skill tree system that feels illogical and unrewarding, and it both looks and feels sub-par in its graphics and control scheme.

Despite having enjoyed the majority of my hours in it, almost entirely due to my company when playing it, I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy this game at its full price. If you do decide to play it, I'd recommend picking it up during a sale and having a laugh at it along with your friends, or going into it with reasonably low expectations.

I'd also recommend increasing the exp gain when playing, because the default is for some reason so low that your character growth is hilariously slow and tedious.

The Legend of Bum-Bo is a good take on the "match 4 tiles" genre of puzzle games, and the visual style really makes it feel like you're Spiderman inside a labyrinth of cardboard boxes. The music is very hummable and is reminiscent of the one in The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.

Similarly to The Binding of Isaac, the items and trinkets you pick up allow for different synergies, some which make it possible to clear most rooms without ever even giving up your turn. All playable Bum-Bi start with different items and passive abilities, which makes the play style unique for each character. For example, one character prioritises building poop shields to block attacks while killing and knocking back everything they can't block, while another one gets more moves by killing enemies, and therefore wants to kill as many weak enemies as possible in order to gain enough movement to pull off bigger attacks and kill even more enemies.

Over 90% of the times when I've felt like the game wasn't being fair, it's been because of bugs, and not because the system itself is flawed. The exceptions are rooms with a lot of enemies where it feels like unless you are given the possibility to match 7 poop tiles within 2 turns, you won't be able to shield yourself from taking damage.

As I understand it, the game was rushed because of a huge data loss about a week before the release, which explains all the bugs and softlocks that people are experiencing. I'm lucky to have been able to avoid any game breaking bugs, but I have encountered a fair share of scenarios where items and game mechanics haven't done what they are supposed to.

It is disappointing when these things ruin your runs, but finding and reporting them is sort of a game in itself. The creators regularly share updates and release patches, and the issues are getting less prevalent with each patch, which really makes it feel like the feedback of the players matter. The Legend of Bum-Bo did come off to a bit of a shaky start, but it's shaping up into a solid and reliable experience, bit by bit.

Overall, I enjoy this game for what it is and what it's trying to become. It still feels a little on the light side content-wise, but if it's anything like its predecessor, it's likely going to be updated with new content for years to come, and I'm looking forward to it.

I have a few gripes, but none that would make me not personally play the game. One is that the music, while great, can sometimes feel a bit too constantly intense for a puzzle game. The game feels a bit unpolished in some aspects, too. Sometimes important information, like enemy attack indicators and prices in the shops, is obscured by assets on top of them. There is also an alarming lack of 'Cancel' and 'Back' buttons, and the placement of the already existing 'Cancel' button is always far down in the right corner, which always feels needlessly far away and cumbersome.

There is also my other hand that doesn't get to do anything since the game is completely controlled by the mouse. I get if the plan is to eventually release it on touch-controlled consoles, but at least on the PC version, hotkeys for spells and picking lanes would be a great quality of life implementation, and would help players save time.

Those things aside, though, I'm having genuinely fun playing this. I do not regret giving Bum-Bo my coin.
