Akane isn't perfect, but its pros and cons balance out thanks to some well crafted level designs and a short length that feels just right for the action it delivers.

Controls initially felt muddy, but after getting used to the rhythm of jumping and attacking, I had little trouble with them. The slower pace of the gameplay actually benefits you as the map layouts are well designed into tricking those who attempt to speed through without caution. Graphically the game looks quite good. The color pallete and characters remind me favorably of some of Nippon Ichi's work, like Rhapsody and La Pucelle. The music is a bit of a disappointment, however. Songs are of good quality, but many do not fit the theme of the game nor the atmosphere of the level in which they are used.

The difficulty curve is well handled, and ramps up smoothly at the final set of levels. They are certainly a good challenge and will test your patience and timing. Overall I enjoyed my time with Akane the Kunoichi and feel it would be enjoyable to players of all skill levels. This one's worth your money.
