It's the strangest thing. Here lies an 11-year old game with 11-year old problems, spruced up for a more modern experience. Everything from the sidequest design, the sluggish pacing during the second half of the game, the glossed-over bits of lore only ever fully explored in side materials; they never fail to remind that this is the same low-budget title from 2010 underneath.

And yet...

I don't know. There should be no reason for me to adore ver.1.22... this much, having already spent a hundred hours each on Gestalt and RepliCant alone. But if you're willing to fix and look past the few technical issues this port has, along with the ones mentioned above, and are looking for an altogether different experience from your usual fare, then this is the place to start.

And if time permits, find a quiet place and listen to "Fleeting Words / Family". Definitely the rearranged soundtrack's crown jewel.

playerbase has matured well enough to the point that you'll see most survivors zip through each campaign as if they're the next big thing in speedrunning or something. would advise potential buyers to play solo before diving into multiplayer, as overall group patience for mistakes is remarkably low, even amongst those who make said mistakes. there's no better feeling than watching someone rush headlong by themselves, and subsequently ragequitting when they get slapped helplessly by a Hunter miles away from the rest of the group. expect an equal amount of veterans and quitters per game.

also keep in mind that Jockeys are literal hellspawn and should be your utmost priority while slashing your way to safety.

PS: Jockeys suck
PPS: Jockey gay

as someone who played this to death back when it first came out, i'm extra glad to see it still holds up well. i should note that i've always been partial to L4D1, but i jumped in thinking that the new additions in the sequel would spoil me to the point that i'd find this one unplayable.

50 hours later, i've been proven wrong. the core experience itself is quite the thrill that i can't put into words adequately, and somehow the hordes + the old Special Infected roster are harder to manage than i remember, even on Normal. the lack of a cooldown meter while shoving more than makes up for the limited set of weapons, in my opinion, and what weapons are available have that punch that i feel Half-Life 2's guns never had.

the biggest setback you'll encounter, as well as the one reason i cannot recommend this game to anyone, is the sheer lack of players: as of the time this was written, Steamcharts counts 571 survivors in-game, while L4D2 sits at an enviable 23,917—and even with the former's surprisingly dedicated community, you'll find trolls and douchebags just as dedicated. par for the course, i guess, although i still can't help feeling disappointed by the odd teamkiller.

i'd only suggest picking this up if, even after all this time, you're still mad at Valve for announcing Left 4 Dead 2 so soon after the first; otherwise, you'll definitely find more to love in the sequel, along with more players to kill zombies with.
