Black Mesa definitely hits the right notes when it comes to being a Half Life game. The story telling is more fleshed out with additional voice acting and characters, arguments between npc's and bets won and lost add to facility you are running late to on your day of work. The first 40 minutes of Black Mesa will have you taking in the sights and the sounds with well known outcomes. All of this extra work shows the Crowbar Collective have put their hearts out their for this well loved title.

The journey through Black Mesa itself is drenched in muscle memory, but the sudden surprise when Nu Xen presents it's gorgeous story telling self makes it feel you are playing a different title. Xen can, however, come with some lacklustre areas with repeated puzzle solving and task completion which can over stay its welcome. Some areas are not without their issues featuring mysterious water bodies in the middle of level geometry or areas that are missing collision, but this is all forgotten when Black Mesa's new take on Nihilanth make up for the previous hour's gameplay.

Recommended throughout if you love crowbars and security guards calling you a sell out.
