After supporting this franchise wholeheartedly since the Destiny beta in 2014 and all the ups and downs since, I genuinely cannot recommend this game to anyone, let alone new players.

Bungie has crafted a huge and magnificent ship but have lost their way, and no longer have the means to man it. The lore is meticulous and interesting, the environments are unique and breathtaking, and the potential for the entire franchise is unmatched. Unfortunately, the developers are utterly helpless to utilize this potential. Instead, they have opted to use the game as an easy cash machine; I would surmise that the primary issue this game faces right now is that the cost to content ratio in every single expansion since release is dishearteningly imbalanced (as is the PvP sandbox). Beyond Light has become the prime example, and for many has put the nail in the coffin of dedication.

Evidence of this is currently flooding the many subreddits and forums focused on Destiny 2, so I won't divulge here. I would encourage you to give the threads in question a good read. To clarify, I don't think this game is just a disappointing chain of blunders; there have been leaps and bounds in the right direction, but for some reason Bungie finds it imperative to try and fix that which is not broken. I sincerely hope things take a turn for the better despite the incredibly unlikely odds. I love this franchise to death and I would hate to see it go out like this. Until that miracle happens, I would absolutely steer clear.

After purchasing and attempting to use the SL, I can understand why it's gone on sale for ridiculously low prices. The most notable problem I've had with it appeared around the fourth time I used it. I tried to connect it via Ethernet cable (because over wifi, "playable" is a stretch even when it's the only thing using data) and when I turned it on it stopped recognizing my wireless mouse and keyboard. I tried switching the Bluetooth adapters, replacing the batteries, everything. Never got it to work. Also, unless it's the first-time setup, it's impossible to connect a controller via Bluetooth without aforementioned mouse and/or keyboard (at least that's what I could glean from my 2 1/2 hours or so of trying). In addition, the software seems unpolished and could definitely use some work. You'd be better off investing in a very long HDMI/DVI/whatever cable and hooking that up to your TV instead. With that, there's incredibly less hassle, it's basically automatic, and you don't have to worry about internet connectivity or anything. Even then, if you have a second computer or laptop, you can use In Home Streaming. It's the same thing as the SL, it just projects to whatever other computer you have on that network running Steam. It's definitely not worth full price, and hardly viable at its discounted prices. Only buy it if you have money and hopes to spare.
