Triangle Strategy is currently my favorite entry within the tactics RPG genre.

It is a game that is admittedly very heavy on the story, but the story is executed very well from the voice acting all the way to the overall "flow" as you make heavily weighted choices that are felt throughout your playthrough. For comparison, TO:R has 3 routes but there exists a jarring contrast wherein both Catiua and Vyce seem borderline schizophrenic when going from 1 chapter and locking onto a route. In Triangle Strategy, the player can self-insert their own convictions when making decisions while the reactions or consequences affecting Serenoa's companions are written really well (Frederica in Roland's route for example). I was glued to my seat for the major turning points in the game especially since Team Asano made expert use of camera angles and panning (think of the Theater scene in FF6) to keep narration fresh. It wouldn't be a huge leap to say that this game provides a cinematic storytelling experience.

As for combat, while some may consider TO:R a bit more hardcore, TS has more variability and diversity in some regard. This may sound weird if you consider that you have a set of 30 unique/usable characters in TS as opposed to the army you can raise from various races and classes in TO:R, but hear me out for a second. TS has difficulty settings that can punish the most hardcore players for making 1 bad decision OR allow those new to the genre to learn the ropes and get a chance to appreciate the game. It's that variability in difficulty that gives me the confidence to recommend this to all of my friends. As for diversity, nearly every single one of the 30 playable units in TS lends to 2 styles of play (aggressive or otherwise). They each have their modestly developed backstory that's told really well through their character stories. I personally prefer this over how things are done in other titles within the genre. The maps also lend to that diversity as you see a broad array of map layouts (that do reappear to some degree) and not just an obnoxious repetition of height-based terrain (looking at you TO:R fortresses).

This is a game where choices do indeed matter and this is key to their design choice because it takes a total of 4 playthroughs to platinum TS. Each playthrough is different enough in a significant way (both story and combat) to keep things fresh and you can strategically speed through the common routes/parts thanks to the various upgrades you unlock. I haven't had this much fun hitting up NG+ 4 times over in a long while. You owe it to yourself to experience all the endings and the battles because there really is substance there. I broke down a little bit after completing the golden route thanks to the vivid change on the title screen. So emotional. So epic. Overall the tone of the game (and the slow pacing) reminded me a lot of Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans except I was the captain of the ship and I was the one making the hard decisions.

I treasure the time I spent playing this game and I hope a lot of newer tactics RPG players choose this as their first game. It's a special experience and to anyone who gets the 100%, I'll happily shake your hand in solidarity. Erador best girl.

I believe this is basically the "season pass". Based on what we got from Reunion of Memories, I think getting 2-3 more DLC updates of the same substance would get me my money's worth.

DLC #1/RoM is combat-heavy with a tinge of collectibles thrown on the side. Unfortunately, the extra chapters don't utilize the crew abilities that added depth to the exploration so if that's what you enjoyed most from the base game then I'd wait a bit before buying this. I personally leaned toward combat in the main game so overall the DLC was ok. There's a treat in the form of a nostalgic boss near the end so look forward to that.

Will update my review as more DLC becomes available.

As many other reviews have asserted, Chrono Trigger is a timeless (no pun intended) JRPG. It had a very forward-thinking expression of time travel in the genre and is complemented by the decision to have enemy encounters on contact for the most part. From the first couple of hours, you can tell that the game places great importance on exploration and storytelling wherein your decisions render ripples in time as part of the time travel theme. I really appreciated the tech combat mechanic which translates well several decades later. By keeping the battle mechanics simple, the game keeps itself fresh as you explore tech combos while not distracting from the substantial storytelling. Additionally, CT has excellent replayability in the many different endings that can pose a healthy challenge depending on when you choose to pursue them. Among games that use NG+, this was one of my favorite games to complete thanks to the effort they put in all the endings. I suspect the game will keep flourishing decades from now since it runs so well on modern hardware. Give it a go if you want to experience a genre-defining JRPG!

WoFF is a very cute iteration of FF. I was pleasantly surprised that the all-star cast did not overshadow the main protagonists. I came into this title expecting a watered-down monster collector experience within the FF universe, but thankfully the game managed to develop its own identity by reimagining several elements of already-existing characters and landscapes. It's like a messy jigsaw puzzle of familiar pieces but not quite a 1:1 replication. I also didn't come in expecting much (thinking it was just meant to be a kid's game) but everything really picked up in the latter half of the game. Overall it was fun collecting all the mirages and playing through everything else.

If you're having trouble launching the game, try finding the .exe file and creating a desktop shortcut. Launching it using the shortcut instead of the Steam client solved the immediate crashing issue for me.

Some minor observations:
  • Why is there a jump feature?
  • The main hub feels somewhat lonely. I know it's probably for story reasons but it feels lonely nonetheless.
  • UI feels dated and you can really tell it was meant for handheld consoles.

Mixed review incoming but please just know that the game is good (just hear me out). I obviously enjoyed the game seeing as I played it to completion even though LIVE A LIVE also came out (I bought both games within 24 hours). I even bought the deluxe version because I was so enamored by the music! When the fusion vocals kick in it becomes such a layered experience that's hard to describe!!

The sprites are also gorgeous and do a great job of differentiating the game from other monster collectors. I think the 14 Bootleg variations add more depth than your traditional shiny encounters and give the game a more personal touch and added strategic nuance.

CB provides a solid 30 hours of story with a robust post-game. For me, the biggest appeal of this game is the music. Kudos to Joel Baylis, Shelby Harvey, and the rest of the team for the fantastic music. There were some moments when I felt like I was listening to some early Paramore. This is the stuff of legends.

I primarily played on PC because I had a stuttering problem on the Steam Deck related to the world loading. I shared this issue with at least 1 other Discord community member and I couldn't troubleshoot it in the end even after fiddling with performance settings. Not a big deal but I just wanted to note it down for the record.

A few things that can be improved:
  1. Pace settings - This is something Monster Sanctuary does well. Passive moves play a big role in this game if you customize it to be that way. The game needs the option to speed up some of the animations because coupled with the robust post-game (it's like a series of fetch quests), normal encounters can become tedious when passives activate slowly over and over and over again. This is also one of the reasons I minimized/stayed away from stickers like roll again or random starter passives. There is a repel item but that doesn't directly address the pace.
  2. Sticker/tape/inventory management - There needs to be more filter and sorting options for these. It takes a long amount of time to browse through stickers especially if you have more builds. There are no preset teams available that make switching teams more seamless as you amass more sticker and tape variety. To the team's credit, they've noted the suggestions related to sticker management.
  3. The noticeboard quest initially feels like it has variety, but eventually turns into a series of fetch quests akin to MMORPGs of the previous decade.
It's at this point of the review where the game is 100% still amazing and I lean towards recommending it. The next part is just personal so if you solely want to base your purchase on the quality of the game and that alone, this is a solid purchase at CDN$ 25.99. Read on if you care.

One of the appeals of indie studios is how the community feels—whether you are just chatting about or asking for technical support. Admittedly, this is a YMMV situation so my experience will not reflect others' experiences. The reason I feel more neutral about the game is because of my one interaction asking for support in the discord. I had an issue with the romance events on this game and just got an unprofessional response in the end. The thread got locked prematurely IMO under the guise of pinging/disturbing others (I'm pretty sure they wouldn't mind the extra info since so many people have asked about the romance events). A controversial solution was provided, but it was akin to being rushed out of a room and discouraged any further discourse on how it could be made better. It felt like the thread got cut short and I was wasting the mod/admin's time. I have asked for support in multiple indie games' discords (Chained Echoes and Monster Sanctuary to name a few) and this ranks poorly among those other interactions.

TL;DR The game is beautiful and worth its price. I am just voicing my personal experience for added context. Give the game a fair chance because the work that went into it is fantastic.

Please note I left my initial review intact below. I just finished all of the chapters and LIVE A LIVE has left me absolutely floored!! This game does a really good job of delivering emotional peaks near the conclusion of every chapter. The epic music kicks in at just the right time combined with captivating storylines to deliver 9 chapters of unadulterated creativity. Every chapter had me feeling some kind of way due to their vastly different storytelling methods. I would get flashes of SF2, Magnificent 7, Baki, and even traditional FF/JRPG notes!

What I really appreciate is the variety that this game brings. I believe they used different artists to bring each chapter's characters to life and their uniqueness really shines through. It's my first time really digging deep into a JRPG that is top-heavy in terms of story but places all of its combat and loads it on the back end. I had my doubts about whether I could truly enjoy a game like this that did not have a strong focus on combat, but that feeling easily subsided as I got to experience... the plethora of experiences! This is a game that respects your time and delivers a strong set of stories. There's something for everyone here—stealth, puzzles, murder mystery(!?), and even a good ol' training arc. I'm absolutely happy that I decided to buy this excellent JRPG! TL;DR
  • Diverse character designs
  • Different storytelling approaches from chapter to chapter
  • Lots of nostalgia!!
  • Excellent delivery/storytelling
Initial Review
I've only finished 1 chapter, but Shifu has already punched a hole through my heart. In the last 5 hours, LIVE A LIVE has teleported me through the previous decades' greatest hits consisting of simple and wholesome storytelling. Shifu's chapter reminded me of how good I felt watching some of my favorite master-disciple movies and shows. I even recalled fond memories of some of Jean-Claude Van Damme's movies. There's a certain quality to the game that really speaks to its '90s roots—from the simple UI to the succinct narration, I can't help but reminisce. This will be the first Square Enix game that I play completely in English largely due to the excellent narrator. Anyone who knows the iconic movie trailer voice will understand how meaningful this game's narration is. It feels like that OG narration from kids' shows in previous decades and it's pretty good. I also want to bring attention to the English VAs. They did a great job and everything just feels right. I know there's more to come, but it's been a great 5 hours so far!

The entire game Jack kept going on and on talking about cows this and cows that... I honestly didn't have the heart to tell him it wasn't that kind of game!!

FF Origin is a nice lil' collab between SE and Team Ninja. It's a pretty game, but it honestly did not capture my attention immediately. The story didn't click until several hours in and the combat turned me off in its early stages (Looking at you, Marksman!!) but boy does it pick up! As more plot threads connect and further combat possibilities from unlocked jobs are made available, the game starts to live up closer to its price tag. It's still a bit of a leap of faith, but let me tell you why I liked it.

The combat is visceral in a more than gritty kind of way that is a slight departure from traditional Final Fantasy games. I absolutely love the scarlet explosions on my screen every time Jack body slams cows/chaos or does some other badass finisher! Sometimes, you'll run into a couple of classes that don't feel optimized, but that's honestly just a symptom of experimentation when you consider how much job variety the game gives you. It's not perfect and some classes feel so much better than the rest, but that's something they can improve on in future similar FF formats. I personally loved the Lancer even though it's a basic class and chucking that spear never got old even after progressing through more than half the story.

As far as stories go, it was a mindblowing series of events. It's hard to describe why without spoiling so I'll leave it at that. The only way the reveal won't be as impactful is if you've seen similar movies (there are a couple) that have the same twist. This was my favorite part of the game so I really want to avoid even mentioning these movies to avoid spoilers. Just be aware that the game takes its time building up to said twists so give it a fair run before judging the story.

All in all, it was a fun game. It felt more Team Ninja than Square Enix, but the end result turned out just fine. It took about 10h to really get me going but it absolutely gets there if given the chance. I killed Chaos!

Bravely Default II is everything I could have ever wanted in a SS/SE JRPG that represents the "old world" in both art direction and mechanics. It is one of the best titles to carry the torch forward in place of the classic turn-based JRPGs I grew up to love. Simply put, it's a more modern take on something like FF3-3D but overall a much more pleasant experience.

To start off, the combat in this game can be tough, but fair. Hard mode presents an actual challenge and that sense of difficulty can last all the way until the final credits roll. With that said, this game still manages to feel rewarding even if you choose the JRPG-staple route of grinding. It's a game that lets you grind without feeling the burnout associated with it. BD2 achieves this by providing consistent releases of dopamine in the form of measurable progress in the game's 20++ interchangeable jobs that you can mix and match to great effect. One of the other hallmarks of good JRPGs is allowing players to achieve a snowball effect under the right conditions as a reward for deeply exploring game mechanics. This comes in the form of taking advantage of the game's fleshed-out job system that lets you utilize moves from primary and sub-jobs, enabling passives from multiple jobs, among many other features. There is a balance that the game expertly maintains between that snowball potential and the base difficulty of hard mode—both spectrums of course remain optional so you can set the tone of your own experiences.

One of my favorite things about this game is the vibrant implementation of picturesque explorable cities and towns. The closest thing I can draw on from my limited gaming experience is the beautiful cityscapes of FF9. The beautiful backdrops in this game can be fully appreciated with the built-in panoramic view that I often used just to take in the sights. My favorite location in the game is the small yet homely town of Enderno.

The 70+ hours it took to complete this game was pleasant all the way. The game ran great and though the graphic customization options were limited, it was just enough to highlight its beauty to the fullest while maintaining a stable 60fps on my RTX 2080.

I recommend this game to those who love turn-based JRPGs and the art style of the earlier PC ports from SE (FF3 3DR). Fingers crossed they release the rest of the games on Steam!

It's next to impossible to justify the price for this game. I slogged through this 60h experience so you don't have to.

By itself, it's a whopping $38.99 here in Canada. Doesn't sound like much compared to other Square Enix titles but the amount of ingenuity and content in this game doesn't come close to 1/3 of other flagship titles. This game has also gone to sub-$5 in other mobile/arcade storefronts and has that overall feel of a mobile game. I'll start off with the many negatives, and try my best to finish the review on a more positive note.

The game took me around 60h to 100%, It has a couple of potentially annoying achievements if you over-level (secret technique achievements). Most of the game can be cheesed with 1 setup and it isn't really rewarding to deviate from it because the combat isn't very deep. Think of a watered-down Brave and Default system but in terms of applying stacks for larger damage. Status effects are not traditional status effects in that they are mostly just used to build the aforementioned stacks for the big damage. The final challenge of the game (the superboss if you will) is also a bit uninspired and is literally just a stat multiplier across the board for both the boss and the encounters leading up to it.

As mentioned in one of the interviews exploring the decisions related to this game, Various Daylife has 2 key influences: early Dragon Quest for the combat and Tokimeki Memorial (a dating sim where you work on yourself to succeed). The latter game's influence resulted in a very boring process of talking to the same NPCs and accepting the same work orders (the work orders are all essentially the same) for days (in-game days) on end to get incremental stat boosts. You don't get any character growth from field combat. This implementation of stat progression would work on some VNs in milder doses, but not in any game that's been labeled as an RPG. The whole process could have been more streamlined for the PC release if they added QoL features such as saving shortcuts for town teleport locations.

As far as the combat goes, basic is the only term I can describe it with. It works on a "3 cha system" where you change an enemy's state by inflicting a status effect, chaining different status effects, and unleashing a chance attack once the chain is built up. This system basically devalues damage over time effects such as burn and poison because chance attacks are just too reliable and too good to pass up for unreliable damage ticks that can expire at any given moment. I also don't know why they even have damage types of elements because as far as I can tell, none of it matters. You can use burning attacks on a Lava Golem, and the only distinction I could see between a piercing and a slashing attack is whether they are marked as Small/Large/Great damage. The combat is just too plain and I suspect this is all because this was a game destined for an initial mobile release.

Overall, this game is not worth 38.99. I completed Octopath Traveler 2 (which is priced at $79.99) just a few weeks before this and I will slap anyone who says that Various Daylife is even worth half of OT2. If you appreciate Team Asano's artistic qualities and voice acting roster, you may get some satisfaction here. I personally really like OT2 Agnea's VA, and Phanna from this game is voiced by the same person (albeit in a fictional language). My only advice is that if you do consider this game, buy it only as an afterthought when the 『TRIANGLE STRATEGY DIGITAL DELUXE EDITION』+『VARIOUS DAYLIFE』 bundle is on sale. That brings this game's cost closer to under $5. I think Team Asano games are beautiful, but this ain't it chief.
