I've been playing Street Fighter games pretty regularly since SF2 in the arcade in 1991. There has been mostly great games with a few misses. I generally like this game, but they keep trying to force the modern controls down your throat at every turn. This wouldn't be so bad if the in game menu system wasn't absolutely trash to try and navigate. For the life of me I can't figure out how to change to classic controls on the character screen for an online match. It shows the crappy default controls as the default. Nobody wants this. Until they fix the awful menu system, I can't recommend this game.

This was a very amazing game graphically and gameplay wise; however, the most recent patch installs a malware anti-cheat software called Denuvo Anti-Cheat and doesn't even tell you it is doing so. I'm glad I finished the game already. Now it's time to remove it. DO NOT PURCHASE IT UNTIL THE MALWARE IS REMOVED.

Edit:

They removed it, so I recommend this game now.

I don't think I've ever written a review for a game here, but this is a game that more than warrants one. I was born in 1975. Pac-Man was the first video game I ever played. It was a cocktail cabinet in the bar at the racquetball club my Mom attended. After her games, She would give me some quarters to play Pac-Man. It was amazing. The sounds, the graphics, everything. I was in love with the idea of video games.

A few years later my friends and I were full on gaming nuts. Talk on the playground would often be where will graphics go and how much more realistic will they get in the future. One of my predictions was that some day video game graphics will look exactly like cartoons. (That’s what I thought they were striving to be back then) I know there was Dragon’s Lair and the likes, but that’s FMV, so I don’t count that. Cuphead is the first game I’ve seen that looks full on like animation you can play. This is what I dreamed of as a kid, but Cuphead is so much more. Having been born in the mid-seventies I can’t say these graphics were representative of my generation’s nostalgia, but I did see some old Fleischer Studios cartoons on TV fairly often. (particularly Popeye) It had it’s own look and that’s what Cuphead is paying tribute to.

Gameplay wise, Cuphead is throwback to mid-eighties to early nineties platform shooters and air/space shooters. These were some of the hardest games ever made and it felt like a real accomplishment to beat one. Games today are too easy. They are longer, but you never really feel like you accomplished something special when you finish them because if you put in the time and go through the motions you will finish it with little effort. Cuphead is difficult and you will die a lot, but it’s never unfair. You have to learn the fights and try and try again making you earn it. Eventually you will get it down and it feels great every time you beat a boss. That feeling I had as a kid making progress in a game and not being able to wait to get home from school to try and progress further is something I miss and Cuphead delivers by the truck load.

Do I think this is a game everyone is going to like? Maybe not because some people didn’t grow up with games that were hard like this. I could see how this might turn some people off, but if you are around my age and you remember Contra, Lifeforce, etc. then this is a must play. It took me 423 deaths to beat the game, but the game never gets boring. The beautiful graphics and style of each boss keeps you entertained. For me I could only play the game a few hours at a time before I was fatigued and would start making stupid mistakes over and over again slowing my progress. The game requires intense focus so once you start making lots of mistakes, give it a rest and go do something else. You will only make yourself frustrated and that’s not fun.

In the end this is a game I feel everyone should try. This is the core of what having skills in gaming is all about. If Mario Odyssey doesn’t blow me away, this will be my game of the year hands down.

This is hands down the best Star Wars game I've ever played. I bought it when it came out and have played through several times over the years. Recently the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade Mod came, so I decided to give this another play through and it has really breathed new life into this game.

If you have never played any of the X-Wing Series games, they are kind of like the Rogue Squadron games, but with more control over your ship that you would expect from a space sim. Nearly the entire game except for the last mission takes place in a parallel story within the original Trilogy, so it's a fresh and it adds to the immersion.

I can't really recomend this game enough to any Star Wars fan. It's pretty fantastic and the best of the X-Wing Series IMO.
