In a nutshell it's “Boo! Haunted House!”

Walk, or limp rather, through a carnival haunted mansion ride where a spooky rubber spider might fall into your lap or a Dracula will burst out of his coffin at any moment! Isn't it scary when someone sneaks up behind you and flicks the soft part of your neck with a rubber band... every two minutes?

Yeah I know I'm not really making sense but I'm trying to describe how I feel Layers of Fear handles horror. In a world where giants like Silent Hill and Resident Evil have already perfected the horror formula; with its high peaks and low valleys, LoF decides to flip the script by getting rid of the valleys all together.

What I mean is that there is no down time in this game. It's just scare after scare after scare. Not even well deserved scares either, you know the kind. Where solid atmosphere creates an uneasy tension that builds up inside you until it is released with a cathartic snap that leaves your heart racing.

Layers of Fear prefers to zap you with a sudden visual jolt accompanied by an ear piercingly loud non-diegetic stinger. It is commonly known in the horror circles as a 'jump-scare'. These aren't generally a bad thing, if done well, but not when it's your only trick. You see it’s just not fun and not truly scary to be jolted every 2 minutes.

HOWEVER I still think that it’s a more creative game than most, you can tell the developers actually put effort into this title; it's prevalent in the graphics, sound design, mechanics and overall game feel. So despite their frustrating scare tactics, it’s still worth buying ON SALE if you’re in the mood for a short burst of jump scare fun.
