I had a wonderful time playing through Grimm's Hollow! I'm a big fan of short, atmospheric games along the lines of OFF and Space Funeral. This touched a very similar spot in my heart.

The combat is turn-based, with your speed stat determining in real-time when your turn happens. Similar to the ATB system in final fantasy games. Unlike those games, there is no setting to make enemies stop attacking when your turn has arrived. Time spent selecting your next action is time lost to enemies making their choices instantly. Put a few points into your speed stat and the haste skill and this becomes a non-issue. Your default attack deals damage determined via timed button press (with noticeable delay that is slightly annoying until adjusted to). Successful hits accumulate points that are used on skills, of which none have a minigame of any kind tied to them. I kind of wish they did, even if it would make the battles take too long in some places.

Grimm's Hollow has a charming narrative that presents the delicate subject of death in a laid-back manner; mostly to its benefit. The soundtrack is upbeat while maintaining a sense of tension that tries to keep the atmosphere grounded. Tries. The dialogue and enemy design tend to drag the mood a bit too far towards whimsy for the subject matter to hit very hard. This is especially noticeable as the plot reaches its climax and the lighthearted air is quickly swapped for one that's much more tense. It works, all in all; it's just that the short length of the game makes this tonal shift awkward to integrate with as a player. Perhaps if the ending segment was longer, I would be more satisfied with it.

Highly recommended to any RPG Maker enthusiasts.

Tell your little men to gather materials so they can do even more manual labor.
This is super cheap at the moment. Click some rocks and get a few trading cards while you're at it.
If you play hard mode, I hope you're at least part Korean. You're gonna need all your Starcraft resource management and APM to beat those gold times
