Early Access Review
EDIT (12/28/2019):
The game has been updated to v1.55 and has fixed the majority of what I've listed below. I can now safely say Battle Realms is in very good hands and as such, I'm proud to say I'm changing my review recommendation to "Yes". The game looks great in 1920x1080 resolution. There are still a few very minor bugs to iron out (i.e game is very zoomed in in Kenji's journey), but this patch has given me good reason to be optimistic for BR's future. Please go buy it and support the wonderful dev team!

I'll keep the previous negative review below for reference purposes, but again just to be clear: the vast majority of the listed bugs have been fixed!

EDIT:
---IMPORTANT PSA---
The dev (or I think it was the community manager?) mentioned in one of the Q&A's that the current price WILL be doubled after Early Access ends, so If you really like the game and have faith in Ed Del Castillo, get it now while the price is good. It's inexpensive, it's one of the best RTS games I've played despite its age. If I'm being honest, I like the game mechanics more than Warcraft III.
----------------------------------

This was probably my first real PC game when I was a kid so I'm happy to see it on Steam and will be following its development. Even with that bias though, I cannot in good conscience recommend buying the game in its current state. Some stuff I've noticed in my few hours of playing:
- The maximum resolution you can set the game to is 1280x1024.
- You cannot play in windowed mode - couple this with the issue above means whatever resolution is set will be force stretched to your monitor's native resolution.
- The minimap gets distorted with duplicates of itself, progressively getting worse the bigger your selected map is (can easily test Skirmish mode). The pinned thread suggests to adjust the resolution to 1024x768 as a temporary fix, but this did nothing for me at all. This is probably my biggest gripe with the release so far since it makes navigating around the map really difficult.
- Some FoV weirdness, could be related to the resolution issues.
- Errors in multiplayer, not going too much into this since it's widely discussed already.

These are what mostly stuck with me off the top of my head, I'll update if I remember more.

That said, the game -is- playable if you really need to scratch that nostalgia itch. I've finished a few Skirmish games myself.

I will also update this review if and when the multitude of bugs and issues have been patched.

Best wallpaper software I've used. Workshop submissions have almost anything you can think of.

The "Biggest Update Ever" killed a lot of what made this game fun for me. To be fair, most of the streamlined (see: dumbed down) features such as 1 hotbar, infinity system, etc., are disappointing but can be tolerated. What I can't and will never see past are the movement nerfs.

I can't blame the developers for wanting to evolve their game, but I think it's become apparent that they don't have a grasp of what made their game fun in the first place. Either that or they just simply couldn't care less about the current PC playerbase since their not-so-secret console port is just around the corner.
