Early Access Review
Rogue-like games are anxiety-inducing to me. I have never been great at them, in fact I admittedly suck at them. What an unwise decision to buy this game huh? Well simply put, the first step towards overcoming your biggest flaws and fears is to face them, and you bet I did. Though, as of yet I have not vanquished the game, but I can safely say that Hades prompts me to; with a design that is quite rewarding regardless of a successfull run or not, this game is immensely motivating as not only you become more experienced after each attempt, but the character itself increasingly gains perks in form of improved stats that aid in your gradual progression.
The world is rich and highly immersive thanks to the premise (Hades' Underworld and Greek Mythology) coupled with stunning game art. The characters all look very badass and depict extremely imaginative renditions of figures we have all encountered. In fact, there are so memorable that the character design in this game to an extent engrain themselves into your mind. No more hilarious and whimsical looking Hades in Disney's Hercules, it's THE Hades in Hades. As for the rather simple gameplay itself, we get to customize lots of things; from the way we can reinforce our own playstyle using so called Boon Upgrades, provided kindly by your friendly, observing neighborhood gods during runs, to the yet scarce, but diverse weapon selection, the means to clear your path to the surface world covers lots of ground for any type of player. I personally like to play with the rail gun (Exagryph) given my long relationship with shooter games and so far it has been my favourite weapon. Naturally, I play with keyboard + mouse, though I would highly recommend playing with a controller, for the pace in this game is extremely fast which renders dashing as vital, and as we all know, dashing with a controller is ten times more pleasant then with your w-a-s-d keys.
Another aspect that I can not praise enough, is the freedom to choose the difficulty of your runs. This opens up the game to a vast audience and will account for its longevity.
Hades is one of my first introductions to the rogue like genre and genuinely made me experience a certain allure and interest in other kindred games.
