Cheesy Grinding Goodness
If you're looking for a deep experience with lots of player freedom, you'll be very disappointed. The world map serves only as a confusing level selection screen, gathering resources is needlessly tedious, quests are difficult to track, and combat is absurdly unbalanced. So Why do I actually recommend it? Well if you're willing to cheese the systems to hell, it can be an amusing distraction to chill out to while listening to music or a podcast.

Pro tip: Upgrade all throwing skills first and use it as your primary means of attack! Also build and upgrade the tavern as soon as possible, then hire high damage wizards (or other ranged fighters if none available) and then go steamroll all enemies while staying at a safe distance yourself. You're welcome 😎.

Combat is solid but lacks variety, leading to eventual boredom. Permanent upgrades serve only as a barrier to progress, that can only be overcome by grinding and dying many, many times. And most frustrating of all is the fact enemies can see and shoot you from any distance. While you can only see what's within the camera view. Which means they have an unfair advantage in combat.

Some kind of Trip

The grotesquely charming clay like models are the main attraction here. The gameplay itself has various issues. Such as very stiff combat (cannot move while attacking), lack of feedback (hard to tell if you're actually hitting anything), strange key bindings (C to interact?) and various bugs and glitches. But if you are at all interested in bizarre little indie games with unique art styles, then it's totally worth checking out for the somewhat surreal experience.

Windward is essentially the trading and ship combat elements of Sid Meier's Pirates! streamlined and expanded upon with features like procedurally generated maps and online multiplayer.

When I first played this game I didn't like it because all the charm of Sid Meier's game had been stripped out, making it feel very generic. But after revisiting it again I can now see that it's actually an enjoyable and relaxing game in its own right. Just don't expect it to give you those classic swashbuckling vibes.

Good games present interesting choices and dilemmas, but the "choices" in this game are ultimately meaningless and only give you a false sense of influence until you realize they do not actually matter in the end.

The price is also insanely high for such a simplistic mobile game experience.

My whole squad committed suicide during TRAINING by all throwing grenades into the wall one foot in front of them. Once I ordered my guys to take cover behind a busted tank and they proceeded to go around the outside of it exposing themselves to enemy fire to do so 😖. This all may be realistic for Nazis but I suspect the American accents are not. So I have really conflicting feelings about this game so far.

A Hidden Rough Gem

Beneath the intentionally tacky veneer is a surprisingly well fleshed out and enjoyable experience here. There is a diverse set of weapons that are pretty satisfying to use. Some unique enemy types keep combat interesting. And items like auto turrets, land mines and teleporters add a small amount of strategy to the combat.

However, there are a few shortcomings that hamper the experience: Each level is a randomly generated collection of hallways and this make strafing (a key to survival) very limited. Player movement is another annoying issue; you can easily get stuck on corners or sandwiched between enemies. Which sometimes leads to frustratingly cheap deaths.

All in all though I find the game strangely satisfying for short mindless busts and the element of strategy really sets the game apart from all other “retro” FPS games out there. So I think it's definitely worth checking out at it's cheap asking price. Especially when it's on sale.
