I think the mixed reviews are from people misunderstanding what this game aims to achieve. There are some bugs but nothing game breaking that I've came across, and already I've spotted a few areas which need to be more fleshed out. First and foremost however, it's a story generator. It's more akin to The Sims than Rimworld, even down to the way the characters speak and make their own decisions. I don't think min-maxing a colony was the intended playstyle for the game, but rather gently guiding the characters to create an interesting story.

This story is from my current game:

I started with two brothers, the older being the king and the younger being the heir. When the younger brother married a foreign Varn girl, animosity started to arise between the king and his sister in law. This eventually culminated when the king ordered mass imprisonment of his Varn subjects due to an influx of drug addicted migrants from that culture, and she tried to burn his house down while he was sleeping. Tried being the key word there - she failed and fled the settlement, leaving the once friendly brothers in a bitter rivalry resulting in the older brother passing the crown to the younger. When bandits set up camp nearby a few years later, the brothers marched alongside a contingent of lords and soldiers from the village, but were defeated. The younger brother was the only one who made it back alive and uncaptured, and now his efforts are being spent on re-organising the village after the management broke down upon the capture of his brother and other lords, while rebuilding the militia and reconnecting with his wife who fled after her failed assassination plot.

Sure, some bugs are there and features are missing - but it is an early access game with promise. Since release two days ago the devs have already released two patches and with a publisher like Hooded Horse behind them I'm confident in the health of this game for the future. If you're still hesitant after reading the above, let the game bake for a while longer before buying it, but definitely keep your eye on this one.
