I cannot stress enough that this game is FANTASTIC! It's visually beautiful, the sound design is flawless, & not once have I felt as though there's something left to be desired when it comes down to character design.

I'm a MAJOR stickler about the quality of attempted body horror & gory visuals, and I've yet to be left disappointed by Red Barrels so far. I've been really itching for a satisfying, fresh horror game for the last few years and this certainly does it for me! I find myself taking in the horror imagery for EXCESSIVELY long times, loving the usual embraced silliness of some contexts & scenarios (i.e. The chapel...)

Something that caught my attention with the negative reviews, however, were the bizarre amount of comparisons to another title; this title in particular being Dead by Daylight. More often than not, they're pitching piss-poor hours in Outlast Trials AND Dead by Daylight.

As someone with 2,000 HOURS on Dead by Daylight, I think it means something when I say that I'm not getting that vibe at all. They're not comparable. The only thing the two have even in common is the multi-player access. It's apples and oranges, for the lack of ability to elaborate without spoiling. I've seen complaints in the same reviews about how it "just wasn't Outlast." That on its own felt particularly disrespectful considering it could not be MORE BLATANTLY in line with the story of Outlast, assuming you have the capability to go into a series being able to digest relatively linear narratives more than a wet paper bag. It is SO VERY Outlast, uniquely as always. (:

So if you were on the fence, take this as your sign to give it a shot. It's fantastic as a solo OR co-op game, and the scares aren't disappointing or permanently relying on jumpscares by any means. I am VERY, VERY difficult to scare and haven't been unnerved or excited by a horror game in years. Each trial is beyond exhilarating, and I have a lot of fun rolling the dice with greater difficulties while I learn each trial front to back. I am blown away by how polished this has become from the Closed Beta to Early Access, & I'm thrilled to see what comes next!
