Early Access Review
Great start for an early access farming sim. The game wears its influences on its sleeves, but that's not a bad thing. It takes everything you love about games like Stardew Valley and adds in some of my favorite elements from Animal Crossing, wraps it up in charming pixel art, and some great characters. While I have my favorites, I am happy to read all dialogue from every character because they all have their own distinct personalities with well-written dialogue! I hope the devs can keep it up and flesh it out as the game grows.

Quality of life is a huge improvement over the genre. The approach to the time spent cooking/crafting/smithing is nice - instantaneous to the player but taking in game time, without just sitting there watching a furnace churn out a bar. While this means you cannot go do something else while smelting, I am not bothered by it. Saving midday. Items that do not despawn. Plenty of perks to unlock and copious amounts of the currency required to unlock them. Light magic elements to improve different aspects of the game.

Something about this game that I cannot quite put my finger on makes the gameplay feel very lax - in Stardew it feels like I have a mad checklist for each season to scramble to complete, but in Fields of Mistria there is something laid back that makes the game so stress free. Missed a bug or a fish in spring? Oh well, get it next time. Maybe it is that community upgrades are not tied to the Museum (which has 'bundles' and is the closest analogue to Stardew's Community Center). Maybe it is that not every single fish and bug needs to go to the Museum like in Animal Crossing, only handfuls from each season. I do not feel like I am really "wasting" any time or that there is something I "have" to be doing in each moment. Can't wait for the updates to see how the game grows!

The GOAT. Phenomenal base game (if maybe a little aged), and even better DLCs. The combat is not great, but it's serviceable. This game really shines in its narrative and characters. The next gen update looks great, and adds some awesome QoL (sign quick casting included by default, namely), but the DX12 version is unstable.

Phenomenal game. Only detractors are stutter and server issues, but they are infrequent and minor.

Difficult, different than the Souls games, but great all the same.

Really wanted to give this a chance. I love Dark Souls, and I thought the revamped multiplayer would be enough to justify the $20 price tag.

It's exactly what they promised: DS1 in 60fps and 4k with some lighting effects.

If you own Prepare to Die and can access the internet, do yourself a favor and download DSFix, DSCM, and some of the top endorsed mods and enjoy jolly cooperation with your friends without the hackers.

Update: after 5 hours of gameplay and some world hopping, game has no audio. Quitting the game causes it to overlap all windows and force a hard reset of the entire computer, only to still have no audio. Disappointing, as the game was enjoyable before. Until these bugs are fixed, I can’t recommend this game.

Good fun as an RPG, good fun as a sandbox game. If you have a friend you want to sit back on the couch with and play a low-stress co-op game, this is a solid choice. Combat is a little hack-and-slash, but that’s okay (and fun) with the classes. Overall, it’s fun and I can get over my issues with the game. If the devs continue to stick with it and listen to the community, this game could have a good lifespan and be what Cube World couldn’t.

I’m a controller player (Steam Link on the couch and TV) and this game’s UI is really lacking for controller players. No way (that I can tell) to easily quick stack or flip items between your hotbar and inventory. The crafting system is mildly confusing and it’s difficult to figure out how to get what you need for specific recipes. The camera can sometimes get weird when it tries to clip through walls, too. I’ve not experienced the audio bugs as of yet, so that could be fixed by now.

Pros: simple, fun, easy to get into, splitscreen co-op
Cons: controller UI (menu system in general)
