Great game, mucky PC port.
There's no online multiplayer, but Remote Play Together is available (see #3 below).

THE MUCK:

#1: Keyboard support is poorly implemented and causes significant FPS drops.
Use a controller instead.

#2: Only player 1 has input bindings by default.
You'll have to manually map the controls for other players.

#3: Rayman Origins does not have support for connecting controllers while the game is running. This makes Remote Play Together a huge pain in the ass. Before starting the game, you must connect a controller for each person you'd like to play with, exactly as you would if playing locally. After reaching the main menu, you can unplug the extra controller(s) and invite your friend(s) to play. You have to do this every single time.

These 3 issues are fixed in the sequel.

16 years after release, Team Fortress 2 is likely the most popular it has ever been.
While Valve has done a great job keeping the game profitable, they have very little to show for it.

Official matchmaking is infested with cheaters. They're not even real players. They're bots that any random person can host on a whim. This problem has persisted for several years and will likely never stop. The cheats they use operate at a level that Valve's anticheat cannot detect.

As a new F2P player, you will not be able to use the in-game chat in Valve's official servers.
This includes basic commands such as pressing E to call out for a medic. The only way to get around this is to buy something from the in-game store* and obtain "premium" status. The aforementioned bots face no restrictions and spam the chat freely. This is because Steam accounts with premium TF2 status are extremely easy to purchase from third-party websites (for as low as one dollar), trivializing the policy and ensuring that only legitimate players get punished for playing a free game for free.

Valve still makes money from this game. It is unbelievable that they have done nothing but add more microtransactions for the past 4 years while allocating absolutely no resources to identifying and removing bots from their own servers. They've added 17 cases to the game since the bots first appeared in early 2020. At least 2 more will be added this year.
Aside from the routine workshop content updates, It's safe to assume that all internal development of TF2 has ceased and will not be starting again. VScript is Valve's way of handing the game over to the community and the gesture will not go any further than that.

I want nothing more than to be proven wrong in this regard.

*The prices of weapons and cosmetics in the in-game store have not been updated in a very long time and do not reflect their actual worth. Keys, taunts, tour of duty tickets and map stamps are the only things you should ever buy there. Everything else is a scam. The vast majority of unlockable weapons are actually worth less than 25 cents.

Since the 2016 matchmaking update that ultimately facilitated the rise of bots, vanilla community servers have almost gone extinct.
The ones that remain are filled with sweats, and you are at the mercy of what they consider fun. Most matches will be unbalanced stomps and you'll only see a fraction of the maps this game has to offer.

Updates have consisted entirely of community-made content for several years. There's even a "community fixes" tag in the workshop (depressing in its own right) which is seemingly just ignored anyway-- Long time players will know that it's very natural for Valve to establish something and not follow through with it. There is no QA, and despite what you may have heard there is absolutely no "playtesting" done. Valve has no idea how a map will actually work in casual mode until the day the update comes out.

TF2 is a genre-defining masterpiece that deserves its place in history, but it fails to provide an adequate environment for new players and Valve isn't interested in changing that. There's no financial incentive to improve upon the game nor is there an easy way to move forward, so they'll just stay the course.

Give it a look if you're curious, but don't stick around.
