Just amazingly smooth combat that improves tenfold on the 2016 version and makes one of the greatest feeling FPS experiences ever. The combat is just so well balanced and the difficulty scaling is great. The game does a great job making you always balance target priority, resources (ammo, health, armor, cooldowns), and your positioning during combat which makes sure you're always kept on your toes and thinking critically about your current situation and what's most important.

Example: one moment you're mowing down a hell-knight equipped with freaking laser swords but oh wait you're running low on shotgun ammo so you you have to go hunt for an imp or other fodder demon to chainsaw but SURPRISE right after that an archvile spawns and now he's your main priority because he's buffing all the other demons and making them hit twice as hard. So now you start fast switching between your ballista and lock-on rockets to down him ASAP all while circling, dashing, jumping, meat-hooking, throwing out ice bombs, and generally just evading and always moving until the archvile is finally dead and you can refocus your efforts on that damn hell knight who's been on your ass this entire time.

The story is a bit contrived and told mostly through lore codices which...whatevs. Also some people may not like all the platforming but I personally didn't mind the downtime between the adrenaline fueled arena battles described above. The combat is just blissful once you get a hang of it; learn the doom dance and make sure you remap your weapon keys so you can fast swap efficiently and forget about using the "weapon wheel" training wheels because it just ruins the whole flow; that mechanic is for the console plebs anyways.

So amazingly different, except not! Id Software goes back to their roots with this game and it’s nothing short of amazing. They throw all the silly mechanics of modern FPS games in the trash. If you’re tired of the following things in your FPS games then DOOM is for you:

Rechargeable health? HELL NO! You have to rip demons apart with your bare hands to get more health!

Reloading weapons? Nope...you don't need that it takes time away from demon slaughtering. If you think this is unrealistic that is FALSE! The bullets are so afraid of the Doom Slayer they load themselves, DUH!

Want to take cover and aim-down-sights to pick away at the armies of hell? NO! You’ll die…quickly; imps don’t give a crap where you hide they will flank you constantly, hurl themselves at you with razor sharp claws or stand back and volley your location with fireballs. If that isn’t enough to get you moving the hell knights will rush and jump at you like roided out linebackers. They don’t care where you hide, just like real demons wouldn’t. To stay alive you have to run, jump, and climb your way across the environments scavenging for health, armor, and ammo all while blowing demons into a fine bloody mist or ripping and tearing apart the ones that escape that fate. Move, constantly, and show those hordes of hell why they should fear YOU, not the other way around.

Other awesome things about this game:

Epic metal soundtrack? Check.

Secret areas, collectibles, and old-school doom level Easter eggs? Check!

Really cool/interesting weapons? Check!

Fast movement? Check.

Original DOOM enemies remastered? Check.

Fun Powerups like quad damage and berserk? Check!

Really the only downside to this game is it can get a bit repetitive, especially once you start upgrading all the weapons, suit, and various other abilities that make you even more unstoppable. Up the difficulty and you’ll get more of the same just more unforgiving when you do make a mistake. Also, if you want to get into multiplayer save your time and just go play Overwatch to get that FPS multiplayer itch scratched. The multiplayer rollout was kind of botched and by the time they fixed things everyone had moved on. You NEED to play this game for the single player campaign though; it’s just so badass you have to experience it. That goes double if you played the original DOOM back when you were a kid like me on your family's first computer. This game is such a perfect homage to the original in all the best ways.
